In the semis, the 3rd-seeded UQAM Citadins stunned the 2nd-seeded Concordia Stingers 59-48. The Citadins took command with an 18-2 third quarter. Concordia led 15-11 after one quarter, though Valerie Gauvin hit three free throws for UQAM after being fouled at the buzzer on a desperation trey. UQAM led 26-24 at the half as Camille Michaud got on track, and 44-26 after three quarters. “It was a tough game because Concordia is a really good team,” said UQAM’s head coach Albena Branzova. “We respected them from the beginning of the season. What happened is that we managed to fight and go beyond what we were planning to go.” Stingers coach Keith Pruden said “for the most part, it was a good game for us. We did a lot of good things in the first half. But they came out and played very aggressive defence in the third quarter and we just couldn’t put the ball in the basket.” Camille Michaud paced the Citadins with 21 on 8-11 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 4-4 from the line and 4 boards.         In the other semi, the top-seeded McGill Martlets dispatched the 4th-seeded host Laval Rouge et Or 46-35 after leading 15-5, 30-18 and 40-22 at the quarters. “It was a really tough match; all the teams are competitive. We had a little bit more depth, it’s probably what gave us the edge tonight,” said McGill coach Ryan Thorne. Laval coach Linda Marquis said “the loss hurts, but we knew McGill was a huge challenge. We had a slow start, we dug our own hole and our mental mistakes, both defensively and offensively, cost us. We cannot afford these kinds of errors.” The Martlets bombed their way to a first-half lead, hitting 7 treys and then romped to the easy win. Francoise Charest was chosen player of the game for McGill, while Marie-Pascale Nadeau earned the laurels for Laval. The veteran Charest “took control of the game,” said Thorne. “She was our leader out there and got us into good sets. She took shots early she believed was hers and was confident in everything she did. … We talked prior to the game about playing in their gymnasium and making sure we didn’t give them a lot of hope. The girls came out pretty aggressive and we attacked them. When you’ve played a team four times you know them pretty well so the girls did a great job capitalizing on knowing what they were going to do and anticipating their next move.” Francoise Charest paced the Redmen with 15 on 6-14 from the floor, 3-4 from the arc, 2 boards and 2 assists. Mariam Sylla added 7 on 3-11 from the floor, 1-2 from the line, 13 boards, 3 assists and 4 steals. Jennifer Silver scored 6 on 3-4 from the floor and 4 boards. Carolann Cloutier notched 3 on 1-1 from the arc, while Roya Assadi, Kizzy Clarke and Valerie L’Ecuyer were scoreless. The Martlets hit 18-54 (.333) from the floor, 7-13 (.538) from the arc and 3-5 from the line, while garnering 33 boards, including 9 on the offensive glass, 13 assists, 13 steals, 1 block, 27 turnovers and 16 fouls.         In the final, the top-seeded McGill Martlets dusted the 3rd-seeded UQAM Citadins 63-50 to capture their third consecutive crown. The Martlets led 14-6, 32-19 and 41-31 at the quarters. “I am very proud of my girls, they worked hard from the beginning until the end. UQAM is always an aggressive team, but we fought with them. After our slow start, we began to attack from the inside and I think that’s what made the difference,” said McGill coach Ryan Thorne. UQAM coach Albena Branzova said “nobody wants to finish a season, a great season, with a loss. It hurts, as always. But still, I’m really proud of the girls, of the way they fought all year, going through the ups and downs. As for today, it’s just hard when the ball is not going in.” Both teams seemed nervous early. Ten total shots in three minutes and twenty-three seconds were necessary to see the first points of the game, a successful layup from Martlets’ Dianna Ros. The Citadins needed free throws and 7 minutes and 31 seconds to add their first points to the scoreboard. It was then 8-2 in favour of McGill. The tone for the match had been firmly established.
