In the semis, top-seeded McGill defeated 4th-seeded Laval 54-47. McGill led 14-12 after the first quarter and 30-20 at the half. But the Rouge et Or outscored the Martlets 19-11 in the third stanza and closed the gap to 41-39 after three quarters. Laval tied the score at 41 in the final quarter but Martlets Francoise Charest, Dianna Ros and Gabriella Hebert drained treys to stifle the rally. Hebert hit her trey with 59 seconds remaining after Laval had narrowed the gap to 51-47. “It wasn’t pretty but at this stage (in the playoffs), all you’re looking for is the W,” said McGill coach Ryan Thorne. “But we fought, we struggled and we pulled it out in the end. Gabriella had a huge three. That’s just the confidence she has in her own game. She took the shot and that was the difference right there. That reminds me of the way we were at the beginning of the year. Out of sync, taking rushed shots, going too deep on the shot clock and making bad decisions. However, some of those were also shots going up and there appeared to be contact (on our shooters) but we didn’t get those calls in our favour. It was a more physical game than usual but we didn’t go to the free-throw line as much (as we expected to).” Marie-Pier Bastrash paced the Martlets with 10 on 3-11 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 2-2 from the line and 5 boards. Mariam Sylla added 9 on 3-13 from the floor, 3-5 from the line and 10 boards. Dianna Ros scored 9 on 3-11 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 2-3 from the line, 2 boards and 2 steals. Francoise Charest notched 4 on 3-8 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 1-1 from the line and 4 boards. Anneth Him-Lazarenko scored 8 on 3-11 from the floor, 2-3 from the line and 6 boards. In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Concordia Stingers nipped the 3rd-seeded U.Q.A.M. Citadins 65-62 as Kaylah Barrett notched a double-double. The Stingers led 20-15, 41-25 and 54-38 at the quarters. But UQAM rallied with a 12-0 run. “We had a very good start,” said Concordia assistant Rastko Popovic said. “We hit a few shots early and it gave us a lot of confidence. We played really well in the first three quarters. We rebounded well in both ends of the floor and had 21 offensive rebounds which was huge for us. Kaylah had a monster game.” Kaylah Barrett paced the Stingers with 17 on 4-15 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 7-10 from the line, 14 boards, 4 assists and 5 steals. In the final, the McGill Martlets nipped the Concordia Stingers 51-48 to earn their second consecutive crown. McGill led 19-12 after the opening quarter, 32-23 at the half and 42-34 after three quarters but the Stingers whittled away in the final stanza and narrowed the gap to 50-48 with 17 seconds left on the clock, then were forced to foul in an attempt to get the ball back. “It was intense right from the beginning… especially in the rebounding,” said Annneth Him-Lazarenko, who notched a double-double. “We knew we couldn’t let No. 4 (Kaylah) Barrett just score at will, so we had to stop her. Then our main focus was to not throw the ball away. We tried to rebound and box-out and I think we did a pretty amazing job and I’m really proud of all the girls.” Barrett fouled out midway through the final frame. McGill coach Ryan Thorne said “we won ugly. It was a defensive battle. They defended well, played our ball screens well and we just out-rebounded them. We made sure not to give them too many possessions but we won ugly with our defence. Anneth had a solid double-double and Mariam was big with rebounds today. We missed a few little ones and we were sloppy with the ball. But that’s where our strength lies. Our guards basically live off our big girls when we go inside-out. It was a typical game for us but we just didn’t shoot that well today.” Martlet point guard Francoise Charest said “it was a tough, physical game but we knew it was going to be tight like that. It’s always physical when we play Concordia. They bang and we bang, so it’s fair in that respect. They can hit the big shots but we kept them away and won it because of that. It was a big win, just amazing and I can’t wait to go back to the Nationals.” Anneth Him-Lazarenko paced the Martlets with 14 on 6-10 from the floor, 2-4 from the line and 12 boards. Francoise Charest notched 10 on 2-11 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 5-8 from the line, 2 boards and 2 assists. Gabriela Hebert scored 5 on 2-7 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 6 boards and 2 steals. Valerie L’Ecuyer scored 4 on 2-3 from the floor, and Arianne Duchesne 2, while Dianna Ros, Kizzy Clarke and Helene Bibeau were scoreless. Ros nabbed 2 boards and dished 2 assists. The Martlets hit 19-55 (.345) from the floor, 4-12 from the arc and 9-18 from the line, while garnering 44 boards, including 15 on the offensive glass, 5 assists, 9 steals, 2 blocks, 23 turnovers and 15 fouls.
