In the sudden death semi, Bishop’s defeated Concordia 70-69 as Sharolyn Higgs hit a 16-foot jumper to cap a 9-0 Gaiters run over the final 90 seconds of play. “This is the third one-point game between us this season and I think the Stingers might have stole one of them, so perhaps we stole this one,” Bishop’s coach Rod Gilpin told the Montreal Gazette. “But we certainly picked the right time to do it. They were all tough. But this is the toughest and it’s good to get games like this because it does an awful lot for your confidence. The higher seeded team doesn’t always win and maybe we can do this again on Saturday.” Melissa Lemay led the Gaiters with 21 points and 9 boards, while hitting a pair of free throws with 1:29 to play to ignite the comeback. Cynthia Hitchcock, who scored 13, added a pair from the line. LeMay added another two free throws and then Courtney Romkey hit a pair from the line with 39 seconds to play to trim the margin to 69-68. Stinger point guard Carol-Anne Tull mysteriously threw up a shot with 13 seconds remaining but it was tipped out of bounds and on the ensuing inbounds play, the Stingers turned the ball over the Hitchcock took it down the floor and got it into Higgs’ hands. “I still can’t believe I made it,” said Higgs. “I didn’t really have time to think about what I was doing. I just got the ball and shot. This is a great win. We knew all along that if we just kept plugging away we could win this.” Concordia coach Keith Pruden said “we turned the ball over every which way we could. That last inbounds was sloppily executed. It’s the first time we’ve turned the ball over like that in months. But give all the credit to Bishop’s. They took advantage of every opportunity they had in the last two minutes. They played really well, certainly the best I’ve seen them play this season. I thought when we got up by seven on them that they might back off a bit but they didn’t. Rod did a great job of keeping them in there.” Romkey finished with 12 points and 10 boards. Tull led the Stingers with 17 points. Cauline Penny added 13.
In the final, Laval defeated Bishop’s 60-57 as Isabelle Grenier scored 22. The Rouge et Or rallied from a three-point deficit at the half to pull out the victory.
