In the semi, Laval defeated Bishop’s 63-56. The Gaiters took a quick 16-9 lead early in the first half as Michelle Huneault converted an inside feed from Cynthia Hitchcock. A Jill Hachey steal and layup gave Bishop’s a 30-16 lead with four minutes to play in the half. But Laval closed out the half with an 8-0 run and only trailed by six 30-24 at the half. Laval began to finally establish itself in the paint in the second half. A pair of buckets by rookie of the year Valerie Samson, a Genevieve Laporte layup tied the score with 17 minutes to play. The teams traded the lead for the next 10 minutes. After a Gaiter bucket by Leanne Clarke gave Bishop’s the lead at 50-48, Laval tightened up its defence. They took a 53-50 lead and then Gaiter forward Courtney Romkey was forced out of the game with a sprained ankle and centre Brianne Masterson fouled out with eight minutes to play. The Rouge et Or scored the next six points and held on for the win. Laval shot 22-29 from the line, while Bishop’s was 3-4. Laporte led Laval with 15 points. Julie Dionne added 14 and Samson 13. Courtney Romkey led Bishop’s with 12, while Cynthia Hitchcock and Leanne Clark each scored 11.
In the final, Concordia defeated Laval 75-62. Stinger forwards Marie-Helene Heroux and Guylaine Blanchette dominated the paint and the boards. Heroux scored 22 and grabbed 14 boards. Blanchette scored 17 and grabbed 17 boards. Wanita Jones added 10 points and six assists. Concordia led 42-28 at the half. “Our only concern about Laval was the fact that they’re a team than can make a run at any time. They never quit,” Heroux told the Montreal Gazette. “Our game plan was to stay focused and strong for the full 40 minutes and that’s what we did.” Concordia coach Keith Pruden said his troops played “very well. Laval got a lot of stuff toward the end but it didn’t hurt us. We just played our game, handle the situation very well and did a great job on the boards.” Concordia out-rebounded Laval 44-23, including 15-8 on the offensive glass. Julie Dionne paced Laval with 16.
