In the semis, the Concordia Stingers defeated the Laval Rouge et Or 61-50. “We really kicked butt in the first half,” Stingers coach Mike Hickey told the Montreal Gazette. The Stingers led 35-14 at the break. “We took it to them in a variety of ways offensively but where we excelled was on defence, picking them up man-to-man and denying the open drives to the basket.” Patricia Demers led Concordia with 20 points and 8 boards. Sharon Sandy added 15 after hitting 8-9 from the line, while Eva Samore scored 12. Laval rallied no closer than 47-41 with eight minutes to play but Demers hit a pair of buckets and Sandy hit a trey to give the Stingers a 54-43 lead.
In the final, the Concordia Stingers stung the heavily favored McGill Martlets 55-45. Coach Mike Hickey, in his third year at the helm, sat on the bench, wiped the sweat from his brow, and pronounced: ‘we’re back’. “When I first came to Concordia, I thought we could win after two years. But that was the ego talking. I knew all along it would take a little more time. These kids worked very hard for this. I’m extremely proud of them. It’s their championship and it’s a great feeling. The important thing, however, is that the program at Concordia is back on solid ground and this is just the beginning for us.” Concordia led 29-25 at the half but McGill rallied to a 41-35 lead with 13 minutes to play. But the Stingers wouldn’t quit and their depth appeared to wear McGill down in the final stretch. “We never doubted this one,” said point guard Tanya Guitman, who paced Concordia with 14. Patricia Demers added 11. The Martlets were 7-0 on the season when star sophomore post Vicki Tessier tore an ACL in her left knee.
After the season, Lisen Moore replaces Chris Hunter as coach of the McGill Martlets. Hunter had spent seven seasons as head coach on a part time basis but McGill athletic director Rob Dubeau opted for Moore as “the best person for the job.” Dubeau said that while Hunter had done a “commendable job as a part-time coach,” the university required “a full-time person who can also assume administrative responsibilities in the department. This new position will allow us to get to the next level – namely that of being competitive at the national level.” Moore’s hiring was made at the recommendation of a six-member advisory board and there was widespread speculation it was based on gender equity. “I’m not whining,” Hunter said. “The bottom line is that life goes on, but how long it takes me to get over this is something I can’t answer. McGill used me, then discarded me. That’s what fried my butt.” said Moore. “A decision was made and I’m doing my best to do the best I can here. I still have an affection for Chris. We spent so much time together. I miss him. He was always a good sounding board. The best way to describe him is as an honest and just man. Taking this job for a number of reasons, including Chris Hunter, was the hardest decision I’ve made in my life.”
Bishop’s hires Rod Gilpin as their women’s coach. Gilpin had been a part-time assistant with the men’s team in 1993 but assumed the women’s helm midway through the 1994 campaign after coach Toni Kordic-Glass went on maternity leave and then decided to step down to spend more time with her family.
