In the semis, Laval upset McGill 60-59 as Sonia Ritchie hit the winning free throws with nine seconds on clock. “No, I wasn’t nervous at all,” Ritchie told the Montreal Gazette. “It’s part of the game, shooting foul shots. Why be nervous.” Ritchie hit both to ice the win. Linda Marquis was fretting, wondering whether she should have exercised the option of taking the ball out of bounds instead of accepting the free throws. “I said to myself that maybe I’d decided too quickly to let her shoot. I said right away I’d have her shoot because she’s one of the top three foul shooters in the country. Then I started thinking about it.” Ritchie finished with 13 points. Chantal Denis led Laval with 18. With the four-oint lead, Laval had a cushion to survive Debby Morse’s trey at the buzzer. Martlets coach Chris Hunter said his troops suffered from a lack of “maturity, at least in a basketball sense. We start two first-year players and one sophomore up front and that hurts us experience-wise.” Tracy Hayman led McGill with 15, but only three in the second half. “In the first half, she was aggressive,” said Hunter. “She got the ball and took it to the basket. In the second half, suddenly she wasn’t getting the ball and taking it in.” Tina Fasone paced McGill with 22. The Martlets shot .290 from the floor in the second half. During a six-minute stretch in the second half, McGill scored three points while Laval clawed back from a 45-36 deficit.
In the final, Bishop’s defeated Laval 67-54 as Melanie McPhee scored 18. “It was a team effort. We just tried to execute our offence and keep it simple,” McPhee told the Montreal Gazette. Bishop’s led 35-25 at the half as MacPhee scored 14. “Myself, I tried to be relaxed and play it like any other game.” Cynthia Johnston added 16 for the Gaiters, including 12 in the second half. Nathalie Boucher led Laval with 13.
