In the regular season, McGill finished atop the standings with a (7-2) record.

In the semis, Bishop’s defeated Laval 67-60 as Cynthia Johnston scored 23 and nabbed 7 boards. Laval led 33-32 at the half.

In the final, McGill nipped Bishop’s 64-61. “Mission accomplished,” rookie Martlets coach Chris Hunter told the Montreal Gazette. “Our objective was to win the league. It’s all gravy from here. Winning the first year is special.” Helene Cowan paced the Martlets with 22. Tina Fasone added 11 and Julie Rousseau 10. Carole Miller led Bishop’s with 20, including a trio from beyond the arc. McGill led 30-28 after the sloppy first half but got its transition game on track to build a 13-point lead midway through the second half. Miller rallied Bishop’s; hitting 10 straight as the Gaiters took a 54-53 lead with 6:30 to play. But the Martlets answered with three buckets to take a 58-54 lead and held on for the win after Miller’s desperation trey bounced off the rim at the buzzer. Bishop’s coach Andrea Blackwell made a gutsy call seconds before Miller’s missed attempt when she chose to take the ball out of bounds rather than shoot bonus foul shots after a McGill foul. “We needed a three-point shot . . . she could have made two fouls shots and still lost by one point.” Rousseau said there was a lesson to be learned. “When you’re up 13 points, you’ve got to work hard, not relax.”
