In the semis, the 4th-seeded UQAM Citadins stunned the top-seeded McGill (formerly the Redmen, but as yet unnamed) 70-61. Despite playing without leading scorer and first-team all-star Jamal Mayali (flu), McGill led 15-11 after one quarter, 28-25 at the half and 50-49 after three quarters. McGill led 60-59 when the Citadins exploded with an 11-1 run down the stretch. “I think everyone knows it’s pretty obvious if we had Jamal we might be a little better but let us not get into ‘what might have been the case’ — (We lost) to the better team,” said McGill coach David DeAveiro. “In the first half we took care of the ball, and in the second half, we didn’t. They turned their defence up and we didn’t know how to play. We didn’t (try going through the) back door and we didn’t keep them honest. They cranked it up to another level and we couldn’t respond. … We played our butts off today, we played really hard and left it on the floor. … Today we didn’t quite have it down the stretch but we played well for three quarters, we were right there but just couldn’t finish it.” Schneiders Suffrard paced the Citadins with 14 on 5-7 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 3-7 from the line, 5 boards, 2 assists and 3 steals. After the season, coach David DeAveiro bailed from McGill for what he once called his “dream job.” DeAverio led McGill to five RSEQ titles in his 10 years with the Redmen, during which he had a 199-127 record. Prior to that, he posted a 210-127 record at uOttawa. DeAveiro was an assistant on the Canadian team that won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2018. He also spent six summers as head coach of the Canadian cadet program, which finished fifth at the 2016 FIBA U-17 world championship in Spain, second at the 2015 FIBA Americas U-16 championship in Argentina, sixth at the 2014 FIBA U-17 world championship in Dubai, third at the 2013 FIBA Americas U-16 tourney in Uruguay and fifth at the 2012 FIBA U-17 world championship in Lithuania. DeAveiro was replaced by Ryan Thorne, coach of the women’s program for the previous 17 years, in which he led them to 7 league titles and their first national championship in 2017. He was named U SPORTS women’s basketball coach of the year in 2016 and is a six-time recipient of the Quebec university coach-of-the-year award. The Barbados-born Thorne said “I’m very excited about this new challenge as a coach. It has taken me considerable time to think about this change. It was actually a very tough decision for me, because I love the women’s program and the staff that I worked with, but I believe this is the right move.” Thorne, who served as president of the Canadian University Women’s Basketball Association, has been part of the Canada Basketball Women’s High Performance program for the past five years, serving as an assistant with the 2015 senior development team which won silver in South Korea and the junior program — from 2016 to 2019 – which won silver in Chile (2016), bronze in Italy (2017) and silver in Mexico (2018). Thorne holds his Level III certification and earned his coaching stripes as an assistant for two years under bench boss Lisen Moore with the Martlets before being elevated to head coach in September, 2003. He was appointed full-time at McGill in 2006 and also served as a basketball instructor in the McGill department of kinesiology and physical education.

Following the season, McGill announced that hereafter, its team nickname would be the Redbirds. The school said it settled on the new moniker because the old Redmen name caused pain and alienation for Indigenous students.
