In the semis, the top-seeded McGill Redmen clipped the 4th-seeded Laval Rouge et Or 59-48. Dele Ogundokun dominated the floor, notching a double-double for the Redmen. “We couldn’t take Dele off the floor as our young kids struggled tonight,” said McGill coach David DeAveiro. “Dele was exhausted but that’s why he is the Quebec player of the year. He gave us energy throughout the entire game.” Ogundokun said “Coach preaches deflections, hands and fighting for loose balls. Winning those 50/50 balls can be the difference in the game and executing on the defensive end can give us a boost offensively.” McGill led 11-10 after one quarter and the teams were tied 23-23 at half and 37-37 after the third frame. The rhythm was slow on both sides at the beginning of the fourth quarter. With McGill leading by three, a technical foul on the Rouge et Or bench hurt the Laval side, with Jenning Leung achieving three of the four free throws awarded. Dele Odungokun then carried the final blow to the chances of the Laval women climbing with a three-point shot that brought the score to 54-42 McGill with 56 seconds to go. “That team is a good team,” said DeAveiro. “They defend really well and have always given us problems. We played them five times this year now and the largest margin (of separation) going into the fourth quarter has been six points. Therefore, we knew it was going to be a battle all night long.” Laval coach Jacques Paiement Jr said “I told them I could not have asked them more. They respected the game plan. We were tied with the fifth best team in Canada until halfway through the fourth quarter, a team that is used to winning. We brought them to the end of themselves and in the end, they just made a few more games than us.” Paiement Jr. added that experience played a part in the outcome. “In a defensive match like this, a four-point lead may seem great. We may have panicked when McGill came off, and we forced the game a little more.” Dele Ogundokun was chosen player of the game for the Redmen, while Alexandre Leclerc earned the laurels for the Rouge et Or. Michael Peterkin paced the Redmen with 16 on 5-9 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 5-8 from the line, 6 boards, 2 steals and 3 blocks. In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded U.Q.A.M. Citadins dumped the 2nd-seeded Concordia Stingers 81-71. Citadins coach Nate Philippe “we followed our game plan to a T. The game plan involved taking away Concordia’s transition game and battling hard for rebounds. It was very successful.” Concordia coach Rastko Popovic said “UQAM played harder than us. They had 20 offensive rebounds. That was the difference. They had 21 second-chance points off that. You can’t win games when you give up rebounds like that and shoot like we shot from the free throw line.” Christian Kadima was chosen player of the game for the Citadins, while Ricardo Monge earned the laurels for the Stingers. The Citadins led 18-14 after one quarter and 35-31 at the half. The Stingers led 52-50 after three quarters. In the final, the top-seeded McGill Redmen dispatched the 3rd-seeded U.Q.A.M. Citadins 82-65. “Of course, the win feels great but we have been very business-like all season,” said 6-1 point guard Jenning Leung. “Our real journey is Nationals. We’ve had two years of underachieving so we definitely want to make a splash this year in Halifax.” Redmen coach David DeAveiro said “Jenning has been amazing. If you look at his story and how he ‘walked on’ four years ago, it’s incredible. He wasn’t even promised a spot on the roster and now he is the leader of the team and does so many different things for us offensively.” Dele Ogundokun was named player of the game for the Redmen, while Greishe Clerjuste earned the laurels for the Citadins. UQAM made the first basket of the game and took a 3-0 advantage but that would be their only lead of the game as McGill moved ahead 19-16 after the first quarter and 42-32 at the half. The Redmen saved their best for the second half as they outscored UQAM 25-9 in the third frame to lead 67-41 after three quarters. They led by as many as 30. “The third quarter won us the game today,” added DeAveiro. “I credit our defence as we held them to nine and then went on a run offensively. When we get in that kind of groove we are hard to beat. … We really don’t care who scores. Everyone on the floor needs to be a threat to score. We try to get the best shot every time and it doesn’t matter who takes it.” Jenning Leung paced the Redmen with 15 on 5-10 from the floor, 2-6 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 2 boards, 6 assists and 2 steals.
