In the men’s semis, the top-seeded McGill Redmen clubbed the 4th-seeded UQAM Citadins 72-43. “I thought we defended well as a team this evening,” said McGill head coach David DeAveiro. “We focused on shutting down their big three shooters and I think we did a tremendous job in doing that. Our kids struggled a little bit offensively, trying to find a groove or rhythm but Adrian (Hynes-Guery) played an exceptional game. He proved to everyone this evening that he is one of the best players in our conference and maybe throughout the country. Also, (Vincent) Dufort led us again tonight with maybe his fourth or fifth double-double of the season. It was overall a great team effort defensively and we just did enough offensively. I think we just wore them down and broke their spirit.” McGill led 18-15 lead after one quarter and 34-25 at the half. “We came out of halftime talking about some missed layups and free-throw opportunities that could’ve given us a bigger lead at the half, so we just wanted to gear down and we knew the importance of winning that third quarter,” said DeAveiro. “All throughout the year we’ve been fairly successful in the third quarter and we’ve kind of imposed our will on teams, so it was important to come out in the second half and establish ourselves defensively and get some easy baskets off our defence.” The Redmen led 53-32 after three quarters. Adrian Hynes-Guery paced the Redmen with 24 on 9-20 from the floor, 2-6 from the arc, 4-4 from the line, 4 boards, 5 assists and 2 steals. Vincent Dufort added 16 on 6-15 from the floor, 3-7 from the arc, 1-2 from the line, 10 boards and 2 assists. Winn Clark notched 10 on 3-11 from the floor, 4-6 from the line, 5 boards, 2 assists and 4 steals. Te’Jour Riley scored 4 on 1-5 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 1-2 from the line and 6 boards. Aleksandar Mitrovic scored 4 on 2-4 from the floor, 0-2 from the line, 5 boards and 3 steals.         In the other semi, the 2nd-seeded Bishop’s Gaiters dispatched the 3rd-seeded Concordia Stingers 70-63. The Stingers opened with an 8-0 run before Gaiter Tim Hunter responded with a trey. Bishop’s rallied to a 15-11 lead before a trey by Kyle Desmarais tied the score at 18 after one quarter. The Stingers rebuilt a 24-20 lead but Jeremy Leonard-Smith drained a trey to knot the score at 29 before Bishop’s took a 37-33 lead at the half. Bishop’s held their lead for most of the third quarter. Posts Tim Hunter and Mike Andrews hit critical buckets as Bishop’s took a 49-48 lead after three quarters. The Gaiters hit 24-61 (.393) from the floor, 3-14 (.214) from the arc and 19-27 (.704) from the line, while garnering 41 boards, including 17 on the offensive glass, 17 assists, 13 steals, 7 blocks, 20 turnovers and 21 fouls. Kyle Desmarais paced the Stingers with 21 on 9-15 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc, 1-2 from the line, 5 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals. Jerome Blake added 11 on 4-11 from the floor, 2-8 from the arc and 1-2 from the line. Morgan Tajfel notched 11 on 3-13 from the floor, 3-10 from the arc, 2-2 from line and 7 boards.         In the final, the McGill Redmen edged the Bishop’s Gaiters 77-74. The Redmen rallied from a 15-point deficit to win their first crown since 1986. Tim Hunter opened the first quarter for the Gaiters with a trey but Vincent Dufort answered with three for McGill. McGill found itself in early foul trouble and Hunter hit four from beyond the arc to give the Gaiters a 23-14 lead after one quarter. Bishop’s dominated the second quarter as Mike Andrews scored seemingly at will and Jonathan Bermillo drilled a pair of treys. The Gaiters led 42-28 at the half. Te’Jour Riley hit a bucket for the Redmen to open the second half. Jeremy Leonard-Smith answered for Bishop’s with a trey but the Redmen found their rhythm with about five minutes to play in the third frame and both teams in foul trouble. They cut the margin to four with a minute on the clock, winning the quarter 27-19, while rallying within 61-55. Onnex Blackwood hit a putback against an expiring shot clock to open the final frame but foul trouble and hot shooting by McGill turned the time. When Scott Ring fouled out for the Gaiters, the Redmen took command. Adrian Hynes-Guery was fouled while shooting a three with 5:08 remaining. He made all three free throws to tie the game at 65. Bishop’s was up by two with just over a minute left but Hynes-Guery drained a three to give McGill the lead 75-74. The Gaiters missed a layup and committed a foul sending the Redmen to the line and the win. “My heart was beating, the pressure was on, the game was close and luckily we were able to pull through and get this win, it feels good,” said the transfer form American International. “Our defence stepped up in the second half and that was the key to victory. We played all those games throughout the season to get to the playoffs. The season really comes down to two playoff games and luckily, we had the home court advantage based on how we played throughout the season. We had our fans with us and we’re able to get the championship for them.” Winn Clark noted that “everyone’s heart was thumping in the last minute, we were pretty excited. We’ve been working hard all week and knew we had the confidence to come through at the end. Adrian hit some big shots down the stretch and we we’re able to defend them when we needed to. The character of this team is incredible. Down the stretch Te’jour had multiple big rebounds, Simon hit big shots and Aleks hit a pair of big free-throws. Everyone just came together and played their butts off.” Redmen coach David DeAveiro said “I’m so thrilled for these kids, they’ve played so hard all year, they’ve battled and have been resilient throughout the season. At halftime we talked about this being a great opportunity for us and we we’re letting it slip away. So, we just talked about bearing down on defence and made a couple of adjustments in the offensive end that made a big difference in the second half. I think that nerves we’re part of the reason why we had a slow start and we didn’t execute any of our game plan in the first half. So, I don’t know if our game plan wasn’t a very good one or we just didn’t execute it. But I think you saw a better team in the second half. We much more in control, running our offence and following our defensive concepts a little bit more. This group has been so resilient all year. They just believe in themselves and that is a big part of being successful.” Adrian Hynes-Guery paced the Redmen with 24 on 4-15 from the floor, 2-5 from the arc, 14-16 from the line, 2 boards and 2 assists. Simon Bibeau notched 12 on 4-6 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc, 2-2 from the line and 2 boards.
