In the semis, the top-seeded Concordia Stingers nipped the 4th-seeded Laval Rouge et Or 66-65. In a controversial finish, 6’2″ Kyle Desmarais hit one of two free throws with 2 seconds remaining after a foul was called about 85 feet from the Concordia basket on Rouge et Or’s final attempt at re-taking the lead to lift the Stingers to what appeared to be an improbable victory at home. Laval had taken a 10 point second-half lead and appeared to have the game under control against the cold shooting Stingers but Concordia created some late turnovers, tying the game late and then getting Desmarais to the line at the end. Laval trailed by 10 early but took a three-point lead at 45-42 midway through the third and then extended the lead to 57-47 on a 17-5 run. But the Stingers, down 65-61, held and then got a driving lay-in from Desmarais to get it down to two and later tying it before Laval’s foul after a miss. Concordia coach John Dore said “Kyle did what he had to do. He’s won some big games for us this year. It’s like he wills the ball into the basket.” Concordia led 21-14 after one quarter 39-30 at the half. Laval led 59-47 after three quarters. Evens Laroche paced Concordia with 17 on 7-15 from the floor, 3-7 from the arc, 4 boards and 2 steals. Kyle Desmarais added 11 on 5-11 from the floor, 0-5 from the arc, 1-3 from the line, 4 boards, 3 assists and 2 steals.         In the other semi, the 3rd-seeded UQAM Citadins stunned the 2nd-seeded McGill Redmen 75-72. The Citadins held McGill to just 9 points during a key 7-minute stretch in the fourth, getting huge efforts from 6-6 Alexandre Bernard, who had 11 of his 13 points in the fourth quarter including an exclamation point alley-oop slam off a transition half-court pass from 5-9 Richard Addai and veteran Gregory Saint-Amand. McGill led for much of the game and entered the fourth up by 6 on the steady work 6-4 Karim Sy-Morissette, who weaved his way into the lane and either finished or found open teammates. But 6-7 Vincent Lanctot-Fortier knocked down a three from the top of the bowl to start the fourth, energizing the Citadins, who took the lead for good on 7 consecutive points from Bernard, including a three-point play and a slick finish inside to lead 60-56. The lead climbed to 5 as Saint-Amand knocked in a pair of free throws and later had a strong finish. But McGill stiffened defensively and a scoop in the lane by Sy-Morissette reduced the lead to three with two minutes to play. Addai drove the right base and nailed a floating one handed tear-drop off of one foot restored a 5-point lead. Later, Sy-Morissette, who went just 4-10 from the free throw line in the fourth quarter made 1-2 free throws and after a missed lay-up, Addai fed Bernard for highlight reel dunk to give QAM an 8-point lead. But McGill wasn’t finished as after a lay-up got the game to 5, Winn Clark stole the in-bounds and made an “and 1″ to get the game back to 2. Bernard then made 1-2, setting up the final possession. McGill, which won three of four regular-season meetings with UQAM, led 22-20 after the opening quarter, 38-35 at the half and 53-47 after three quarters. McGill had a last-second chance to force overtime at the buzzer but an attempted three-pointer by rookie Te’Jour Riley missed the mark. Vincent Lanctot-Fortier paced the Citadins with 17 on 6-9 from the floor, 2-2 from the arc, 3-3 from the line, 6 boards and 2 blocks. Gregory Saint-Amand added 16 on 5-12 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 6-8 from the line, 10 boards and 5 steals. Alexandre Bernard added 14 on 3-4 from the floor, 8-11 from the line and 7 boards.
