In the semis, Concordia clipped U.Q.A.M. 84-75, after leading 38-26 at the half. The game started slowly for both teams. UQAM played well in the first minutes of the game. Bruno Bernier-Visotzky drained a 3-pointer early on, which put the large and already loud UQAM crowd into a frenzy as UQAM took a 4-point lead. Both teams exchanged a 2-point lead for most of the first half but Concordia went on an 8-point run to end the half. The Stingers started the 2nd half just like they ended the first, building a 28-point lead with a little more than 10 minutes to go. Concordia played very well on defence, especially in the key. UQAM shots just refused to go in and since they weren’t able to go under the basket, they were pretty much in trouble. UQAM then start to foul a lot (questionable calls from the referees on both sides tonight, not a good day for them). Most of the fouls were on Damien Buckley. He responded with a 19 on 22 at the free throw line. The Citadins came back within 7 pts of the Stingers but finally lost by 9. The Stingers prevailed despite a subpar performance. “I think early in the first half was all about having jitters. We knew what happened last year and a lot of guys, I think, came out with a lack of confidence,” said second-year point-guard Damian Buckley, who was 19-for-22 from the foul line. “It took a while, but we finally relaxed and played our game. But we had to remind ourselves that we lost only two games all season to teams in Canada and that we weren’t going to lose this one.” Concordia led 38-26 at halftime, but only after rallying in the closing minutes of the first half, primarily because of opportunities at the foul line. Before that, the Stingers failed to get off to a quick start and found themselves in a see-saw, one-point game, with the Citadins making relatively easy scores while being hard-pressed to get anything to drop. Buckley’s 14 points led the Stingers in a first half that saw them shoot only 34.5 per cent from the field, compared with UQAM’s 37.9 per cent. Concordia was 12-for-13 from the foul line in the first half. “They came out playing a zone and wanting us to shoot the ball from the perimeter, but Dwayne (Buckley) and Ben (Sormonte) weren’t making anything,” head coach John Dore said of his team’s shaky start. “We started attacking inside and it changed the complexion of the game, with them getting into foul trouble.” Concordia outscored UQAM 23-8 in the first seven minutes of the second half and led by as many as 18 points before the Citadins closed within 10 in the final three minutes. Damian Buckley sank 13 of 14 attempts from the foul line down the stretch to deny any possibility of UQAM upsetting the Stingers.

Damian Buckley paced the Stingers with 36 on 8-12 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 19-22 from the line, 8 boards, 5 assists and 3 steals.         In the other semi, Laval dumped McGill 83-69. Fifth-year senior Jean-Michel Leblanc scored 20 second-half points on a great shooting display coming off screens to lead the Rouge et Or into the final J.P. Morin had his usual night at the office, scoring 16 second-half points in a variety of ways, while cleaning the boards and kicking out to LeBlanc and others when doubled inside. The Rouge et Or led right from the start of the game and by as much as 8-10 points most of the second part of the first half only to see McGill close out the first half on a mini-run to draw to within 41-38 by the intermission. Laval then took a double-digit lead with about 8 minutes remaining to close out the game strong. Jean-Michel Leblanc paced the Rouge et Or with 27 on 9-15 from the floor, 6-9 from the arc and 3-4 from the line, while garnering 7 assists and 3 steals.         In the final, Concordia bombed Laval 84-57. The Stingers rode an 11-0 run in 5 1-2 minutes midway through the first half to a 33-18 lead culminated by a pair of treys from Benjamin Sormonte in transition, both on tremendous feeds by Damian Buckley who pushed the ball at every opportunity. Stingers continually went to their bench with fresh troops and seemed to wear down the Rouge et Or in waves. 6’7” J.P. Morin was quiet until late in the half, bringing Laval back to within 12 at 37-25 but the Stingers got a pair of late free throws from Damian Buckley to lead by 14 at the break. Concordia then went on a 12-3 run off the start of the second half, primarily in transition, culminated by five straight points from Sormonte including his third trey of the game. After Morin hit a three on the first possession of the half to bring the game back to 11, Stingers pushed the ball at every chance and scored the next 12 points to build a 21-point lead. The lead grew to 31 at 75-44 with 8:24 remaining and both benches emptied shortly thereafter. Sormonte finished with seven treys, often in transition or against Laval’s 1-3-1 zone. “I wanted to miss one,” Sormonte later joked. “It was a great feeling, great atmosphere. We played amazing team defence. I’m very happy to end on a good note like this, and now we have one more step to do.” Patrick Perrotte noted that “this was our last chance. Everybody showed up today and we got to end the last home game in a big way.” Coach John Dore called it a “storybook ending. We couldn’t have gone out a better way with that sentiment.” Sormonte led Concordia with 25 points on 9-13 from the floor, 7-8 from the arc, 5 boards and 6 assists. Patrick Perrotte added 23 on 10-15 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 2-3 from the line and 3 boards.
