In the postseason semis, Bishop’s stunned Concordia 72-69 as Jeff Szita dominated the paint and the Gaiters suffocating defence befuddled the Stingers. Concordia led 37-35 at the half. “It was an embarrassment the way we played on defence the last time we played them,” Bishop’s coach Eddie Pomykala told the Montreal Gazette. “What John Dore said the other day about not expecting us to change anything we did defensively coming into this game was true. We didn’t. We just wanted to do it better.” Pomykala added that Szita’s defence was exceptional. “We ride on his back. The defence starts with him. His shot blocking is phenomenal and he rebounds like hell out there. His performance for us this season as allowed our other kids to grow on his leadership.” Szita said “coach talked all week about applying defensive pressure on and off the ball and that’s what it came down to. What’s important for us today is that I think we came together as a team.” The Gaiters ripped off a 14-6 run midway through the second half to pull away from the Stingers. “It was the best defence I’ve seen them play this year and Szita did a helluva job inside against us,” said Concordia coach John Dore. “There were times out there when we didn’t compete but they played their best basketball when it counted.” Jeff Szita and Jason Thorne each scored 16 to lead Bishop’s.         After the season, Rookie of year Donal Corkum of Concordia tests positive for traces of cocaine and cannibas. Under existing regulations of the Canadian Centre for ethics in Sport and the CIS guidelines, he is suspended for four years because of the cocaine violation. But the CCES chief executive officer Paul Melia says that could be reduced to two years as the schedule of penalties is about to be replaced with ones consistent with those of the World Anti-Doping Agency. The rule change is scheduled to take effect June 1.

McGill appoints Craig Norman, the CIS coach of the year at RMC, as their new head coach. The 42-year-old native of Greenfield Park, Que., was head coach at Royal Military College in Kingston, for six seasons, dating back to 1998. He previously had other head coaching stints at Dawson College (1990-92) in Montreal and Champlain Regional College (1995-98) in St. Lambert, Que. He replaces Nevio Marzinotto, who served with the Redmen as a part-time head coach for five seasons and as an assistant coach for nine years. “I am very excited about going back home to Montreal,” said Norman who played five seasons at Concordia, earning all-Canadian honours in 1986-87. He was also a member of the Quebec provincial team and spent three years at Dawson College, where he was a CCAA all-Canadian in 1982. ”I understand that we have some good incoming recruits and I am confident that we¹re going to build a winning tradition at McGill.” Director of athletics Robert Dubeau said “we are delighted to welcome Craig Norman to the McGill staff. Hiring a full-time coach of his caliber illustrates the University¹s commitment to improve our men¹s basketball program. His leadership and excellent knowledge of the game, as both a player and coach, will pave the way towards a more exciting and competitive basketball team at McGill.”
