In the sudden death semi, Domenico Marcario scored 21 as seventh ranked McGill topped Bishop’s 76-61 and improved their record to (21-5) while capturing their sixth win over the Gaiters on the season. The League’s MVP hit 5-9 from the field, 1-3 from the arc and 8-8 from the line, while grabbing 4 boards getting two steals. McGill led 35-31 at the half and out-rebounded Bishop’s 49-32. Frederic Bernard added 19 points. Denburk Reid scored 15, Kirk Reid 8, along with 8 boards. Former Gaiter Joel Sherbino also scored 8. Phil Miguel led Bishop’s with 12 points. Paul Stephens and Dwayne Ells each added 11. The Gaiters shot .530 from the line.
In the finals, Laval d’d McGill 86-59; 75-62 (2g-0).
In game one, sophomore forward Charles Fortier scored 31 as Laval thrashed McGill 86-59. Fortier hit 12-19 from the field, including 5-6 from the arc, grabbed 4 boards, six steals and 1 block. The Rouge et Or repeated capitalized on McGill mistakes scoring 37 points off 25 Redman turnovers. McGill countered with only 9 points on 15 Laval turnovers. Marc-Antoine Horth added 16 for Laval and grabbed 7 boards. Remi Cambron scored 15 and Samuel Audet-Sow 12. McGill grabbed an early 10-3 lead but their perimeter defence was lax and they quickly fell behind. Laval shot .530 from the field, including 8-19 from the arc. Laval led 49-30 at the break. Frederick Bernard led McGill with 16 points. Kirk Reid added 15, Denburk Reid only 3 as he quickly ran into foul trouble. Domenico Marcario was held to eight points after averaging 18.7 during the regular season. Laval improved its record to 21-6. Laval led 49-30 at the half.
In game two, Laval dumped McGill 75-62 before a record sell-out crowd of 1,265 fans at McGill’s Donald Love Competition Hall. Charles Fortier again led the Rouge et Or, scoring 29 points on 8-13 from the floor, 3-4 from the arc and 10-12 from the line, while grabbing 11 boards and forcing two steals and a raft of McGill’s 17 turnovers. Laval led 39-33 at the break but McGill rallied to within two midway through the second half when guard Dominique Soucy hit a desperation trey against an expiring shot clock to spark the Rouge et Or’s offence. Laval hit 9-19 trifectas. Samuel Audet-Sow added 16 for Laval, Marc-Antoine Horth 11 and David Brownrigg 10. The Rouge et Or took advantage of 17 McGill turnovers, converting them into 16 points compared to only seven points scored by the Redmen off 16 turnovers. Laval had a 37-31 edge in rebounds, limiting McGill to few second-chance opportunities as the Redmen grabbed just eight offensive rebounds compared to Laval’s 15. Denburk Reid led McGill with 20 points. Domenico Marcario added 12, collected 5 rebounds and stole the ball 3 times. Frederic Bernard scored 7 and grabbed 7 boards.
In game three, Laval bounced McGill 75-62 as Charles Fortier scored 29. Laval led 39-33 at the half but McGill rallied to a one-point lead through the second before folding. Samuel Audet-Sow added 16 for the Rouge et Or, including 12 in the second half. Denburk Reid led McGill with 20. Kirk Reid added 12.
After the season, Ken Schildroth resigns at McGill to assume the position of intercollegiate coordinator at York. Schildroth had coached the Redmen for the previous 15 years.
