In the regular season, McGill finished (7-1) atop the standings. Laval rejoins the league.

        Playoff non-qualifiers:

Laval Rouge et Or: Alexis Segal, Francois Bibeau, Serge Baribeau, Daniel Beaudoin, Foise Denisio, Luc Jolicouer, Jean Turgeon, coach Bob Descheneaux

U.Q.T.R Patriotes: Michel Lamarche, Laurent Boulanger, Tony Bellini, Francois Greffalb,

In the semis, Bishop’s defeated Concordia 72-71 as Trevor Bennett scored 29, Ian MacLean 14 and Mike Mullins 12. Leon Bynoe led the Stingers with 10. The Stingers led 46-43 at the half. Mullins, a rookie, hit the winning jumper with 23 seconds to play. The Ottawa native had spent most of the season on the sidelines with a torn ligament. “I’m happy but I’m also pretty tired,” Mullins told the Montreal Gazette. “This was the first time this year I’ve played practically the whole game.” Gaiters coach Garth Smith said “I told you I had a few wrinkles to throw at Concordia and one of them was Mullins. I may have brought him along too slowly by not playing him enough this season. But there was no question he was starting tonight. He’s a smart defensive ballplayer.” Trevor Bennett said “everybody figured us to get bombed out at the start of the season. But all we needed was time to get together.”

In the finals, McGill swept Bishop’s 80-73; 81-69 (2g-0).

In game one, McGill prevailed 80-73 after leading 48-41 at the half. Pat Kehoe paced the Redmen with 25. Gregg Fasulo added 21 and Steve Skabla 11. Trevor Bennett paced the Gaiters with 10. Pat Kehoe told the Montreal Gazette that “everything I heard about Bennett was by word of mouth. And tonight, I was determined to concentrate on him. I didn’t want to see him do the same thing to us. … I went out to slow him down. He’s just not used to a 6-7 guy who is willing to play defence. I just took away all of his inside stuff. I also wanted to take it to him on offence.” Redmen coach Butch Staples said “we started off very well in the first half. But the defence was what carried us thru the second. It was their one-on-one situations and not any offensive structures which got us into the second. Offensively, in the second, our execution wasn’t as it should have been. Our game plan was to paly intense defence. And Pat did an excellent job in that category.” Gaiters coach Garth Smith said “we didn’t shoot well but we were still in the game. But the officials took a large section of our game away too. Refs (Harry Hus and Ross Buckle) didn’t help the game. I’m not going to say anything about them. But I was glad when the game was over.” Redmen guard Gord Brabant told the McGill Daily “we played good defence. They were only able to score by going one on one. … We’d throw the ball inside to Kehoe or Fasulo and they’d have three guys on them, so they’d throw it back out for open foul-line jumpers.” Kehoe said “they were cheating inside on me. I tried to pitch it out because I knew they’d be open.” Redmen coach Butch Staples said “it wasn’t a great game but we learned a lot. I think when you play a great game, you have nothing to learn from.” Steve Skabla, a fifth-year senior from Randolph Macon College in Virginia, twisted an ankle in the second half.

In game two, McGill defeated Bishop’s 81-69 as Pat Kehoe scored 28, Gordie Brabant 20 and Gregg Fasulo 13. Bishop’s, which was ahead 40-39 at the half, was paced by Blair Shier’s 22 points. McGill turned around its season from 8-20 a year earlier after being bolstered by three transfers, Greg Fasulo, an NCAA division III All-American from Bowdoin where he averaged 25 ppg; 6-5 Steve Skabla from Randolph-Macon and 6-7 centre Pat Kehoe from Providence. The Redmen also added 6-2 guard Kevin Dogan, an all-Canadian junior college player. Redmen coach Butch Staples told the Montreal Gazette that “when we changed to a zone defence in the second half, Bishop’s had problems adjusting to it. We got a few breaks off it but I have to credit our defensive game and rebounding for this victory.”

After the season, the RSEQ announced that member teams will commence playing each other three times during the regular season, as opposed to twice.
