She was fouled on the play and miss the free throw but the Gee-Gees got the rebound and Melina De Iulio promptly nailed a trey. Jama (Bin-Edward) is just insane, guarding the ball. That’s what we anchor ourselves in. It’s something we’ll continue to look at throughout the playoffs. Ultimately, it’s what brings us energy, and it’s super fun to play as well.” Bin-Edward said “I think that our team is really defensive minded. (Queen’s) is a good team, and we knew that they were gonna go on runs. I think that we did a good job of limiting the runs, and then also creating for ourselves.” Rams coach Carly Clarke said “Queen’s is a top 10 team in the country. So we knew it was going to be a tough battle the whole game. … We have a lot of trust in each other on the floor. The Ravens prevailed as Teresa Donato and Tatyanna Burke nailed treys in the final minute of play. Natsuki Szszokin answered with a trey for the Gee-Gees but the Ravens hung on for the win. Burke said “losing is really not an option for us and I think a lot of us practiced really hard for this game. Ravens coach Dani Sinclair said “there’s more work to be done. Rams coach Carly Clarke said “one of the best things about our team is we’re unselfish when we move the ball, and everybody’s a threat in their own way. Tonight was certainly a product of that, with four double-digit scorers and two others with seven.” Ram Jama Bin-Edward said “we’ve had a lot of people coming out and in from injury. It’s about using the pieces we have that game…any of us can score double digit points, it’s just a matter of who’s going to go off that day.” Ravens coach Dani Sinclair said “we’ve got to use this as motivation and learn from not only tonight but also how we prepare overall.” Rachel Farwell paced the Rams with 12 on 4-14 from the floor, 4-12 from the arc and 11 boards. The Marauders ripped off a 13-0 run in the first quarter to take control. Back-to-back treys from the Sarah Gates and Mia Spadafora in the third quarter highlighted another 13-0 run as McMaster romped to the win.         In the other West quarterfinal, the 3rd-seeded Guelph Gryphons dispatched the 6th-seeded Windsor Lancers 77-67 after leading 22-17, 41-30 and 59-54 at the quarters. The Gryphons built the double-digit lead at the half with back-to-back treys from Burke Bechard and MacKeely Shantz in the second quarter. The lancers rallied within 62-58 in the final quarter but the Gryphons forced a five-second call on the inbounds play, which led to a trey from Natalie Vigna. Another defensive stop led to a Bechard layup and a 67-58 lead as the Gryphons rolled to the win.         In the West semis, the Brock Badgers (1W) edged the McMaster Marauders (4W) 49-45. The Badgers led 20-16 after one quarter. The Marauders led 25-23 at the half. The Badgers led 41-33 after three quarters after rookie Kaley Demont nailed three treys in the frame. “I was in the zone and I don’t even remember where I shot from on the court,” Demont said. “It was an adrenaline rush. We showed everyone today that Brock Badgers plays team basketball.” The Marauders drew within 47-45 on a trey from Deanna Mataseje but the Badgers iced it at the line with 21.9 seconds to play. Badgers coach Mike Rao said “we overcame a lot. We didn’t make a lot of shots or move the ball nearly as well as we should have, but they found a way defensively to win it. From that aspect, I’m proud of these women.” Badger Ivana Twumasi, who wore knee Tape with ‘Dad’ written on it in memory of her recently deceased father, said “this win meant everything to me. I pushed through, trying to show up for my team, and we won. I was thinking about my dad a lot before the game.         In the other West semi, the host Western Mustangs (2W) defeated the Guelph Gryphons 61-57. The Gryphons led 10-8 after one quarter despite back-to-back blocks from Mustangs Ashley Wheeler and Sarah Harvey. The Mustangs led 29-22 at the half after repeatedly pilfering the ball for runout layups. The score was knotted at 42 after three quarters as the Mustangs struggled to resolve a Guelph switch to a zone defence but they overcame a seven-point Gryphons with six minutes to play by closing out the affair with a 17-6 run. Gryphon MacKeely Shantz hit a bucket to trim the margin to 58-57 with just over a minute to play. The Gryphons got the ball to Burke Bechard on an in-bounds play with six seconds to play but she was unable to split a Western double-team and the Mustangs iced the win at the line. “When [Guelph] were going on a run, we just knew that if we took our time, we would hit the shots and get the boards, and we just trusted each other,” said Western’s Brett Fischer. Mustang Ariane Samure said “we really wanted to push… at the beginning of the game, we told ourselves that we were going to play with heart, and I think that’s what we demonstrated. … You feed off of the crowd’s energy, and especially knowing that you have other varsity student-athletes that are cheering you on, but friends and family, it makes you want to play your heart out.” Mustangs coach Nate McKibbon said “we were trying to keep the momentum from last week. As soon as we knew who we were playing, I think just a switch went on, and we were just ready to play.” Ariane Saumure paced the Mustangs with 14 on 6-18 from the floor, 1-6 from the arc, 1-2 from the line, 14 boards, 5 assists and 7 steals.         In the West final, the Brock Badgers (W1) earned a berth at the national championships by thrashing the Western Mustangs (W2) 77-58 after leading 8-0 early and 16-14, 38-30 and 60-39 at the quarters. Badger rookie Madalyn Weinert said after Samantha Keltos left the team following the regular to join the Australian pro ranks, “now, we’re coming back better than ever. It shows how as a team we can overcome things and have each other’s backs.” Badgers coach Mike Rao said “in the last game we didn’t play as well except for a good defensive effort. Tonight, we really teed it up well at both ends of the court and were shooting the ball a little better. … This team really bought in and worked hard,” he said. “It shows their resolve and understanding of the game.” Madalyn Weinert paced the Badgers with 24 on 9-20 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 5-5 from the line, 11 boards, 2 assists and 3 blocks.         In the Critelli Cup final, the Ryerson Rams (E1) edged the Brock Badgers (W1) 72-70 in overtime. The Badgers led 9-0 early and 19-10, 36-25 and 52-36 at the quarters. The Badgers led 61-39 with seven minutes to play but the Rams shifted to a full-court press and stormed back with a 28-6 run, including a pair of treys from Mikaela Dodig and an and-one on a trey by Rachel Farwell. Dodig forced overtime by knotting the score at 67 with 80 seconds remaining on the clock. The score was knotted at 67 after regulation. Victoria Lawrence gave the Badgers the lead in overtime off an in-bounds play but Jama Bin-Edward and Eve Uwayesu drove for layups and then Kiya Giles hit an insurance free throw for the Rams to pull out the win. Rams coach Carly Clarke said Jama Bin-Edward “kept us in it” for the first three quarters. “She had some poise for us when we were really struggling to score. … Down the stretch… Defensively… Phew, what an impact.” Clarke added that her troops “kept believing the whole game.” Badger MacKenzie Robinson called the loss “devastating. We’ve come so far with such a big expectation in mind, so we’re disappointed because, obviously, we wanted that Cup. We wanted to win. … We were shocked. The Rams were down, but they came out with a press and we didn’t do enough to respond to that.” Badgers coach Mike Rao said “I’m disappointed because I didn’t think we played up to our standard. We were a little too selfish at times. Midway through the season, Katie Hamilton steps down as coach of Nipissing. She subsequently assumed coaching duties at Algoma. Hamilton guided the Lakers for five years. She is replaced by Carleton assistant Rachel Van Woezik, who toiled for the Lakers in their inaugural OUA season in 2014-15.
