After the season, Queen’s interim coach (for 2019-20) James Bambury accepted the head coaching position at Brandon. Bambury had been serving as the Gaels assistant in 2020-21 to long-time Queen’s coach Dave Wilson, who returned from his retirement for a year as the Gaels the arrival of new coach Claire Meadows.
Gee-Gees coach Andy Sparks announced his retirement after 13 years at the Ottawa helm. In his tenure, Sparks led the Gee-Gees to six national championship appearances and five OUA Championship appearances, collecting two U SPORTS bronze medals, one OUA gold, four OUA silver, and one OUA bronze medal. He was named the OUA Coach of the Year for the fifth time in 2018-19, and amassed a 13-year regular record of 188-67 and a playoff record of 27-23. “Deciding to retire has been one of the most difficult decisions of my life. I always say family comes first and I need to live up to my own words,” Sparks said. Sparks was an assistant coach with men’s Carleton team in 2004-05, when they won a national title. He also served as coach for the junior women’s national team in 2012-13, leading the team to a semi-final appearance (qualifying them for a berth at the 2012 FIBA World U19 championships) at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Women in Puerto Rico. Gee-Gees assistant Rose-Anne Joly was named the interim uOttawa coach. Joly had served as an assistant between 2017 and 2020 before joining the NBA Basketball School in Dubai, where she served as coach and operations coordinator for seven months. Her coaching careere also included a stint as an assistant for the Quebec U15 team that won a national championship in 2016.
The University of Toronto appointed interim coach Tamara Tatham to the permanent helm of the Varsity Blues. The two-time Olympian became a full-time assistant for the Blues in June, 2017. In 2018, she became an assistant and apprentice coach with Canada Basketball, overseeing camp logistics for the FIBA America Qualifier (U17) as well as planning and executing team and individual workouts. She was also a mentee coach for Raptors 905 in 2018, becoming the first Canadian female named to a coaching staff of a North American professional men’s basketball team. The Brampton, Ont. native toiled with the Canadian senior women’s national basketball team from 2007-16, including trips to the 2012 London and 2016 Rio Olympics, two Pan American Games (including the team that captured gold in Toronto in 2015), six FIBA Americas championships and two FIBA world championships. Tatham toiled for the University of Massachusets between 2004-07. She also played for various international clubs from 2008-17, including Lappenranta Catz (Finland), Halle Lions (Germany), Piestanske Cajky (Slovakia), Townsville Fire (Australia) and Dynamo Novosibirsk (Russia).
York coach Erin McAleenan resigned to assume the helm of the U.B.C. Thunderbirds. She was replaced by Ontario Tech coach Christa Eniojukan, who toiled for the Lions between 2003-05. She’d earlier played for the Laurier Golden Hawks between 1999-2002. She was also the coach of the Academy for Student Athlete Development Durham Elite, a role she held since 2016. “I am elated to come back and lead the Lions women’s basketball program,” said Eniojukan. “I am a proud alumna who truly enjoyed my experience as a student-athlete and I feel honoured to have an opportunity to lead the women’s team.”
Ontario Tech, in turn, appointed Laurier assistant Megan Grant to the Ridgebacks helm. Grant toiled for the Golden Hawks between 2005 and 2011, leading them a fifth place at nationals.
