In the quarterfinals, Laurentian defeated Guelph 75-33. The Gryphons (coached by Angela Orton, assisted by Jocelyn Laviolette and Janey Tomasevic, managed by Christine East and Julie MacAulay, and trained by Kristine Lyons) included Monique Muller, Karen Schroder, Linda Veach, Stacey Guest, Jennifer Heelis, Janet Vanderpost, Jennifer Baulk, Kelly Cook, Catherine Donnelly, Carla Griffioen, Manie MacDonald, Deb Robinson, Shelby Sims, Tracey Voorberg and Anne Wideman.

McMaster whipped Queen’s 60-39. The Golden Gaels (coached by Dave Wilson) included Julie Farquhar, Vicki Wilson, Tanya McIntyre, Ainsley Geddes, Jennie Laughton, Trina Rasmussen, Jennifer Hume, Heather Spero.

Toronto dumped Lakehead 77-63 as Joan Stock and Denise Scott each scored 9. The Blues used a late 7-0 run to take a 37-32 lead at the half. The Norwesters rallied within one in the second half before Toronto took command with a 12-0 run. “We picked it up in the second half and got momentum going,” Blues coach Michele Belanger told the Varsity. “There were a couple of spots on the floor that were tough. We lost composure offensively and we started to

run the ball a bit too much which hurt us.” The Norwesters (coached by Stu Julius) included Pam Leitch, Kathy Fitzgerald, Barb Hill, Kathy Harrison, Michelle Black, Jenny Burgess, Bonnie McAlpine, Lisa Corsault, Patti Johnston, Darlah Belanger, Jodie Radosevich, Julie Halverson, Lorna Braaksma and Marcy Wood.

In the last quarterfinal, Western whipped York 82-60. The Lions (coached by Bill Pangos) included Joannn Jakovcevic, Jennifer Cushing, Eva Weinroth, Cathy Amara, Garvia Bailey, Maureen McNeilly, Tanya Philip.

In the semis, the Western Mustangs crushed the Toronto Varsity Blues 67-46. The Blues shot just .320 from the floor and just 1-5 from the line. “The ball just wouldn’t drop in,” fourth year forward Sue Barzo told the Varsity. “When you bounced one off the rim, they didn’t even have a chance to fall in like it would in our gym. The ball was bouncing everywhere.” But coach Michele Belanger felt that the Blues lacked concentration. “They played the worst weekend in the twelve years I’ve been coaching this team. I can’t put a finger on it. It’s phenomenal. We played as if we were afraid to lose, we were uptight and we just couldn’t buy a basket.” Barzo said “it wasn’t like one person played poorly. We all played badly all the way through and we were all looking at each other wondering when this was going to end.”

In the other semi, Laurentian dispatched McMaster 74-59. Marauders coach Tricia Hyland-Winik told the Hamilton Spectator that “we just got tired and their depth and strength allowed them to pull away. But it wasn’t a 15-point spread like the final score indicated.”

In the bronze medal match, McMaster defeated Toronto 63-52. The Marauders took a 14-2 lead and romped as the Blues shot just .310 from the floor. Guard Sue Barzo told the Varsity it was “pretty hard to get psyched up for (the game) knowing that we had to win the previous night and didn’t. It’s so disappointing knowing that we should have qualified for the nationals and could have done better than we did last year.” The Blues (coached by Michele Belanger, assisted by Jim Henderson) Included Denise Scott, Samantha Reed, April McClellan, Sue Barzo, Christine Brown, Heather Marlborough, Joan Stock, Kim Johnson, Susan Brown, Marion Barber, Rachel Katocs.

In the final, Laurentian defeated Western 59-48.
