In the last quarterfinal, the McMaster Marauders dusted the Ottawa Gee-Gees 70-43 as Gloria Tomasevic scored 20, Vicky Harrison 16 and Heather MacKay 14. The Marauders broke to a 12-0 lead and romped. The Gee-Gees (coached by Wanda Pilon, assisted by Denise Dignard, Louise Tousignant and Nadia Lebreux) included Fabienne Perrin, Johanne Morin, Carolyn Frielink, Patricia Anderson, Janet Swords, Debbie MacInnis, Colleen Campbell, Caretta Williams, Sarah Shilts, Viviane Ellis, Peggy Oberthier and Anne Legault.

In the semis, Laurentian dispatched McMaster 76-60 as Carolyn Swords scored 16. Gloria Tomasevic led the Marauders with 21. Vicky Harrison added 19 and Heather Mackay 7. Laurentian ripped off a 1-20 run to take a 19-7 lead and expanded the margin to 41-25 at the half. McMaster closed to with 10 but faltered when Lauren Crich, Tish Jeffrey, Cathy Doucette and Vicky Harrison all fouled out down the stretch.

In the other semi, Toronto nipped Lakehead 63-60. Blues coach Michele Belanger told the Varsity that “the girls played really well, I think we’re finally out of our slump (which saw them lose two of their final regular season games). We came out on top. The three guards played just awesome, with much composure. … This time our defence really held them off. In the past we haven’t played tight defence but this time we played really, really well. Denise (Scott) played outstanding all week-end and taking that foul in the start of the game seemed to set her back and make her rethink her playing. We pulled together just great. We were really pumped and we didn’t doubt ourselves. In the past, finishing a game with confidence seemed impossible.”

In the bronze medal match, the McMaster Marauders dumped the Lakehead Nor’westers 77-62 as Vicky Harrison scored 22, Gloria Tomasevic scored 20, along with 19 boards, and Heather Mackay 21, along with 14 boards. The Nor’westers (coached by Stu Julius, assisted by Mike MacKay) included Pam Leitch, Kelly Fitzgerald, Kathy Harrison, Barb Hill, Jenny Burgess, Sharon Knowles, Leanne Yarish, Dariah Belanger, Kerry Gabriel, Lorna Braaksma, Jennifer Taddo and Lisa Mazur.

In the final, Laurentian defeated Toronto 79-70 to avenge two consecutive title losses to the Blues. The Voyageurs trailed 47-45 at the half but exploded for a 16-4 run to open the second frame and take command. “I told them that, ‘If we are going to beat these people, I’m going to put you out there and we’re going to go one-on-one. No more gimmicks, no more trapping around, let’s get out there and beat them with good fundamentals’,” Voyageurs coach Peter Ennis told the Ottawa Citizen. “Of course, I didn’t say it that quietly.” Blues coach Michele Belanger said officiating proved the difference. “We work at it 12 months a year, I don’t know if they do that. That’s my only concern. These kids sweat, cry, bleed basketball for eight months of the year and they’re working two hours every day. What is the official doing to prepare, other than think about it and maybe read the rule books.” Chantal St. Martin paced the Voyageurs with 18. Carolyn Swords added 16 and Sue Stewart 12. Denise Scott led the Blues with 18. Sharon Butler added 13 and Joan Stock 13. “It’s important in the sense that you want to win for all the veteran players,” said Swords. “Shirlene, this is her last year, and all of us wanted to win it, if not for ourselves, for her. The six of us rookies have the next five years to win if we didn’t win it this year. Shirlene didn’t.”
