We weren’t getting the shots and when did shoot, we couldn’t hit it. I think we were a bit uptight.” Foreman added that playing in the weaker division of the league, the Badgers were “not used to playing at that level game after game, not used to playing with the kind of intensity you need all the time against Laurentian and Toronto.” Badgers coach Chris Critelli said “defensively, we did what we wanted to do against Laurentian, held (Carol) Hamilton in check. Heck, we held them to 67 points. But offensively, we just didn’t do anything.” The Badgers (coached by Chris Critelli, assisted by Chris Dooley) also included Maureen Kelly, Pam Polson, Janice Jockel, Joanne Drake, Heidi Melloh, Lisa Volsey, Janice Hogeveen, Yvonne Doodeman and Carol Beauclair.

In the final, Toronto defeated Laurentian 77-74 to capture their second straight title. Angela Orton scored eight of the Blues last 10 points to pull out the win. “She’s a clutch player in tight situations,” said teammate Pat Melville. Orton scored 24. Melville, who was selected the tournament MVP, added 21, along with 12 boards, and Peggy Blumenthal 12. Laurentian trailed 14-4 early but rallied on the rebounding of Carol Hamilton (who nabbed 15 boards). Anne Rimes and Hamilton each scored 17 for the Vees, who trimmed the margin to 42-41 at the half. Sharon Knowles added 15. Laurentian took a 52-49 lead with 12 minutes to play and extended it to five with seven minutes left. But then the Blues took command. Melville, who missed most of the first half with three fouls, pilfered the ball and raced for a layup to knot the score at 62. Orton later connected on a three-point play to give the Blues a 72-70 edge. Melville told the St. Catharines Standard that “that was our plan, to play her (Carol Hamilton) as tight as possible.” Carol Hamilton led the Voyageurs with 17, along with 15 boards. Anne Rimes added 17, Sharon Knowles 15 and Sheila Ivan 14, along with 9 boards.
The all-tournament team featured MVP Pat Melville (Toronto); Angela Orton (Toronto); Carol Hamilton (Laurentian); Sharon Knowles (Laurentian); Karen McComber (Queen’s); and Carolyn Oliver (Brock).
After the season, Sandy Turney was turfed as head coach at Ryerson and replaced by Concordia coach Mike Hickey, who was three times named Quebec coach of the year. “I’ll reinforce the philosophy we had at Concordia; to always play against the best possible competition, play as hard as we can and to do it with class,” Hickey told the Montreal Gazette. “I believe we’ve always done it with class at Concordia.” The 36-year-old native of Hempstead, N.Y amassed a record of 235-162 since beginning his coaching career with the Sir George Williams Georgians in 1973. He formerly played with the Georgians. He led the Georgians to a 56-18 mark, including back-to-back trips the Canadian championship. When Sir George Williams and cross-town rival Loyola College merged to form Concordia in 1975, Hickey took over as head coach of the women’s team and three times has been named coach of the year in the Quebec University Athletic Association. In all, his teams have been to the national championship six times. “It was a hard decision to make, to leave after having been here so long and having done so much. But I’m going to Toronto for what Ryerson has to offer me now and down the road. I looked at myself staying at Concordia and realized I wasn’t about to get ahead very much in the next few years.”
