In the opening wild card qualifying round, Toronto defeated Queen’s 79-47 as rookie Angela Orton scored 22, Sue Marzolini 11 and Theresa Burns 8. The Varsity Blues started two freshman and played five rookies in their regular rotation. “I suppose it’s unusual to use so many first-year players,” said coach Michelle Belanger. “But we’ve played close to 40 games this year and it’s given them experience. We still make some rookie mistakes in the big games, but this experience will help us immensely in years to come. This team can really improve.” Toronto struggled early. But Burns pilfered the ball three times to turn the tide before Orton took command on the boards, helping the Blues build a 47-24 lead at the half. The Golden Gaels (coached by rookie Dave Wilson) included Lyn Southcott, Alice Hayhurst-France, Ellie Jones, Martha Chamberlain, Jenny Quail, Patti-Ann Whalen.

In the other qualifier, Western defeated McMaster 60-54 as B.J. Forsyth scored 20 and Deanne Campbell 19. Sylvia Zimmerman paced the Marauders with 14. In the qualifying quarterfinals at the OWIAA tourney, Toronto defeated Brock 58-51 as Angela Orton scored 34 points and grabbed 10 boards. Diane Hilko and Maureen Kelly each noted 12 for the Badgers. Carolyn Foreman added 8. Toronto led 32-23 at the half. The Blues outrebounded the Badgers 51-45. The Badgers (coached by Pat Woodburn, assisted by Bob Blasko) also included Peggy Stamps, Patty Stamps, Trudy Montel, Melanie Brown, Lena Olszewski, Janice Jockel, Lynn Storm, Rhonda Walcarius, Jackie Kuntze and Dawn Dixon.

In the other quarterfinal, the York Yeowomen thumped the University of Western Ontario Mustangs 100-71. In the bronze medal match, Guelph v Laurentian

In the final, York defeated Toronto 58-56 despite trailing for all but the final 90 seconds. Lions coach Frances Flint told The Excalibur that the rally from a 7-point deficit was a function of perserverance. “We kept chipping away at their lead. They had confidence in themselves. Our team balance came through for us.” Kim Holden pilfered the ball for a runout and an and-one with 3 seconds to play. Fern Cooper said “I just can’t believe we won after being down. If we ever hit our stride – look out.” Leslie Dal Cin paced the Lions with 18. Fern Cooper added 12. Tournament MVP Pat Melville led the Blues with 21. Angela Orton added 18. “We should have won the game,” Blues coach Michele Belanger told the Varsity. “I think the emotional win over Laurentian took a lot of us. We didn’t expect to win, so I think the team found it hard to get up for York.” Belanger said fitness was also a factor. “It was a little like running into a brick wall. We were up for most of the game and then we got tired, which made us a little rattled. By the time we regained our composure there just wasn’t enough time left.”
