I guess it’s the inexperience, in general terms, of our team. We had a lot of new players and we just seemed to have a hard time coming together.” The Athenas (coached by Sally Kemp) included Sue Porter, Beth Parsons, Jennifer Russell, Nancy Campbell, Jill Fisher, Robin Burgess, Jan Carwardine, Karen Chapman, Victoria Hunter, Marg Kerr, Tan Cheng Liang, Joanne Reffle, Norie Spence and Cathy Brown.

In the regional qualifiers, the Brock Badgers (1st, tier 2) whipped the Ottawa Gee-Gees (7th, tier 1) 75-47 as Donna Hilko scored 17, Peggy Stamps 14, Sandy Perryman 12, Melanie Brown 9, Janice Holmes 4 and Lori Nelson 2. With the win, Brock is elevated to tier 1 for the 80-81 campaign. The Badgers led 41-24 at the half, hit 31-66 from the floor and 13-22 from the line, while outrebounding Ottawa 36-20. Badgers coach Pat Woodburn told the St. Catharines Standard that “Perryman held us in the game early, then Hilko came on strong later in the game.” Badgers assistant Bob Blasko said “the win was a lot tougher than it looked. … Once we broke the double-digit lead barrier, then Ottawa sagged and we enlarged the lead. Patricia ‘Tish’ Hannon paced the Gee-Gees with 22. Louise Hurteau added 8. The Gees hit 20-57 from the floor and 7-14 from the line. Toronto rallied within one but the Badgers got their transition game going and pulled away from the Blues. The Blues shot .630 from the line, and the Badgers .460.
