By virtue of their finish in the Tier 2 division of the OWIAA, Toronto, as regular season champ, and Brock, as runner-up, qualified for the OWIAA preliminary tournament draw. The Blues would host a six-team playoff that would include the bottom four teams from Tier 1 and the top two from Tier 2. The winner of the tournament would join the top three finishers from Tier 1 in the OWIAA semis. Brock tied with Carleton in the Tier 2 standings for second place but qualified for the tournament by virtue of a +5 points differential in games between the pair. They’d each won one contest.

In the opening round, Tier 2 champ Toronto dispatched Tier 1 cellar-dweller McMaster 55-46 as Jane Leuty and Barb Grochowski each scored 12. Diane Seegmiller paced the Marauders with 18. The Marauders (coached by Cathie Miller) also included Hendrix, Patti Fairfax, Karen Cushing, Joyce Loucks.

Sixth-place Tier 1 finisher Queen’s defeated Tier 2 runner-up Brock 58-48 as Kim Headford (Handford?) scored 16, Jackie Dean 10, Annie Fox 8, Deakin 6, Brunton 4, Conway 4, C Fox 2 and Gillies 2. The Gaels led 30-28 at the half. Melanie Brown led the Badgers with 16. Diane Skinner added 11, Diane Hilko 8, Jean Morris 5, Jill Ianiero 4, Joanne Lukow 2, Lori Rudel 2 and Wendy Wells 2, while Janice Holmes, Louise Weatherell and Lori Lemon were scoreless. Badgers coach Pat Woodburn told the St. Catharines Standard that “we have a gutsy, scrappy team. I was hoping we wouldn’t get blown out in this game and everyone came through. All the players came off the bench to perform very well.”

In the preliminary semis, the Ottawa Gee-Gees nipped the Queen’s Golden Gaels 50-47. The Gaels (coached by Doug Fraser) included Kim Handford, Janice Deakin, Mary Brunton.

In the other semi, the Toronto Varsity Blues nipped the Western Mustangs 59-58. The Mustangs (coached by Noralie Jackett) included Heather Abbott, Liz Armstrong, Marty Demaree, Sue Edwards, Anne Fulton, Debbie Gray, Vicki Harber, Sue Riach, Kim Stansbury, Joanne Van Goor, Suzy Wilson and Linda Woodhouse.

In the regional finals, the Ottawa Gee-Gees defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 53-46. The Varsity Blues (coached by Sharon Bradley) included Jane Leuty, Sandy Turney, Barb Growchowski, Linda Baumann, Karen Zellen, Laura Dampf, Cathy Heather, Janet Carson, Joanne Goodrow, Barb Binkley, Mlymarczyk and Fletcher.

In the provincial semis, the Laurentian Voyageurs bounced the Ottawa Gee-Gees 77-31. Shortly before the game, Voyageurs coach Norm Vickery told his troops that he would be taking two years off from the helm to explore other opportunities.

In the other semi, the Guelph Gryphons dispatched the Waterloo Warriors 80-66.

In the bronze medal match, the Waterloo Athenas pounded the Ottawa Gee-Gees 101-66 as tournament MVP Liz Silcott scored 39 and Puller Hanson 18. The Gee-Gees (coached by Erik Anderson) included Pam Coburn, Cindy Tyrlik, Patricia Hannon, Sue Owen, Wanda Pilon, Theresa Kowal, Mia Flipsen, Trudy Vriend, Louise Levesque, Joanne Draper, Marie Carr and Misette Critelli.

In the final, Laurentian defeated the Guelph Gryphons 63-40 to win their sixth consecutive Ontario title. The Gryphons led 28-24 at the half. But Laurentian found another gear early in the second half and soon led 40-32. Sylvia Sweeney led the Voyageurs with 16, along with 10 boards. Eileen Galuska scored 15 and Allison Towriss 12. Agnes Baker nabbed 8 boards. Ingrid Kihl paced Gryphons with 12. Candy Clarkson added 10.

After the season, Toronto coach Sharon Bradley stepped aside. “I knew when I took over the position of Recreation Co-ordinator this year that my workload would be heavy,” Bradley told the Varsity. “I knew I would have to evaluate the situation, and that somewhere down the road I would have to quit coaching. It doesn’t seem like the right time, but there would never be anytime that would seem right.” Bradley was replaced by Michele Belanger.

Carleton coach Hugh Reid is replaced by Glynne Turner, who’d coach one year at Algonquin and then coached the Ottawa Bytown women’s team. A fitness instructor, Turner obtained a Master’s in sports psychology from the University of Ottawa.
