       In the SIBL, Western captured its second straight title with a (7-1) record. The Mustangs started Ross May, Jim Griffin, Gary Boug, Bill Lawson and Barry Howson. Lawson and May were a pair of Toronto products, from Bloor Collegiate and Runnymede Collegiate, respectively, who the Toronto Varsity Blues had desperately coveted. Griffin was a 6-8 freshman. The league again featured five teams – Western; Toronto, McMaster; Windsor; and Queen’s — as McGill continued to de-emphasize sports, playing only six exhibition games against members and finishing 1-5, and 9-12 overall.

       After the 1961 season, Ottawa suspends basketball for a year because of lack of interest. The Gee-Gees said there was no interest, in the form of attendance, and claimed they couldn’t justify increased travel costs because of the addition of three teams to the league.

       In the OIAA, Waterloo breezed through the season undefeated, finishing 8-0 in league play and 19-2 overall. The Warriors thrashed second place McMaster (which was playing in both the OIAA and the SIBL) by a 92-73 score in the regular season finale to ensure the title. Waterloo was led by Bill Jones’ 30 points. Ray Palmer added 18, Jerry Hickey 16, Aldridge 12, Pando 8, McCormick 6 and McNaughton 2. Gene Rizak led the Marauders 24. Mike Schertzer added 18, Parker 10, Harrison 8, Holmwood 6, Valentine 4 and Chris 3. In an earlier match, Waterloo clipped McMaster 77-69 as Bill Jones scored 34.
