In the SIBL, McGill opted not to play, choosing instead to play in a Montreal city intercollegiate league. That left five teams in the league. The title was captured by Western with a (7-1) record. Shortly before the season began, McGill reach an agreement with the league under which it would play Queen’s, Toronto and McMaster and if their winning percentage was equal to either the first or second place teams in the final standing then they have would have the right to play off with the second-place team, unless one of these two teams is one which they have already met. If this was the case then they lose their playoff right. …………………………………………………… Toronto edged host McGill 55-51. …………………………………………………… Queen’s edged McGill 43-41. …………………………………………………… Host Queen’s dumped McGill 54-46 as Price scored 12 and Denny Bozic 10. The Lancers led 76-71 but Dan Norman, Peter Potter and Boris Walchuk hit buckets to give Toronto a one-point lead. The Blues blocked a Lancer shot and Doug Wyles nabbed the rebound. He signaled for time out but Lancer Pat Dunnion apparently didn’t hear the ref’s whistle and kept checking. A flurry of elbows and fists ensued with both benches emptied. Dunnion was left with a bloody nose. Windsor’s Leo Innocente tried to persuade Wyles, who was sitting on the bench, that the Lancers had been robbed. Wyles, a football played, decked Innocente. The university’s athletic director, Warren Stevens, said poor gate receipts for the football team left the department with little option. He also indicated that the players would have to dip into their own pockets to pay for the trip, or default the games. Stevens told the Varsity that the athletic directorate would pay the travel costs of the hockey team, rather than the basketball team, because “it was the decision of the Directorate that the hockey team had tried much harder over the season than the other teams and consequently deserved to have its two remaining games. In addition, they feel that it is their duty to the faithful fans of the Hockey team.” The basketball Blues apparently raised the money for they subsequent travelled West, losing 78-53 to Windsor and by an identical 78-53 to Western. In a battle of tough zone defences, the game was tied at 30 at the half. Windsor coach Hank Biasatti said his team was thrown off by Western’s use of the zone. It kept “us off balance,” Biasatti told the Windsor Star. Western’s Johnny Metras, who played only six players, noted that “my guys hustled all the way.” Greg Stone led the way with 27, Ron Hodgins 14, Gary Boug 12, Ross May 8, Bill Lawson 8 and Howie Bobkin 3.
