The CIAU had 19 members. “There was a great variation in the standards of play between the institutions, a different philosophy towards athletics between many members and difficulties in agreeing upon common standards of eligibility,” said the governing body in its annual statement.

       In its second year of senior intercollegiate competition, Windsor (then Assumption College) shocked the league by tying Western for the title.

Windsor coach Stanley Nantais subsequently challenged Western’s Johnny Metras to hold a one-game playoff for the title. But Metras, still smarting from the defeat in the final game of the season, flatly refused to play the rubber match.
