REGULAR SEASON

Toronto 6-0   Warren Stevens

  Western 1-5   Lew Davies

Toronto swept all six games to capture the crown. The Varsity Blues were a young squad, given little chance of capturing the crown at the start of season, particularly as they returned only four returnees. But Bill Bodrug returned to school, Tommy Hastings came up from the St. Michael’s College frosh and Frank Doughtery, Johnny Powers and Nels Hogg were brought up from the intermediate team. “It was the work of Frank Dougherty and Johnny powers which was the shining light in a very bright season. Both were outstanding stars in their first season of senior basketball and both won regular positions on the squad. They scored 28 and 26 points respectively during the six-game series and were only headed by the veterans, Bill Bodrug and Neil Sullivan who tied for the lead with 39 points each,” the Varsity reported. “John Bedford deserves special praise. He played practically 40 minutes of every game and was the outstanding guard in the league. He also scored 28 of his team’s points, all of which makes Johnny one of the most effective men in Canadian basketball. The veteran Phil Gold, playing his sixth year of Varsity basketball, was handicapped by lack of time. While this kept Phil from near the top of the scoring column he was none the less every effective while on the floor.”
