In mid-February, the Winnipeg Wesmen women bid for an 89th consecutive victory in an attempt to eclipse the 88 consecutive wins registered by the UCLA Bruins between 1971-73. But they fell one game short, losing to arch-rival Manitoba in game 89. Still, it was a tremendous accomplishment to tie the Bruins record. “We have to get rid of the stigma that we’re Canadians and therefore not supposed to be as good as Americans,” said biology student Sandra Carroll. “We believe we can do whatever we have to do. There aren’t too many egos around here. The record says a lot about the coaching staff, because they took a bunch of players who, before, the program, weren’t individual record breakers, and they molded them into a talented team. If we had gone to U.S., we would have lost a little bit of what we’re about. There are a few good women’s teams in Canada, and the only way the level of basketball is going to go up in this country is for the good teams to keep playing here and to give the high school kids something to emulate.” Coach Tom Kendall noted that “they’re getting the feeling no one can beat them as long as they work hard. …It used to be that when I took the team to the United States, customs took away their spines at the border. We’d roll over the let them beat us. Now, we’re looking to destroy someone.” The Wesmen were entirely home grown talent except for Andrea Hutchens from Newfoundland. They last lost on Oct. 29, 1992 when they fell 71-61 to the Alberta Pandas.

In the finals, Winnipeg defeated Manitoba 84-50; 74-62 (2g-0).
