Lakehead closed with a 9-2 run in the final 90 seconds of play but fell just short. “I wasn’t really surprised by our win,” said Manitoba coach Addy Ryngach. “I think it’s more a case of being satisfied or relieved that we finally had a good game against them.” The Thunderwolves (coached by Larry Leith, assisted by Wanda Pilon) included Jane Bullock, Lucy Patterson, Monica Burchert, Astrid Kneipp, Terry Brown, Mary Slater, Mary Jo Fitzpatrick, Deanna Blumenfeld, Gail Snyder, Joanne Drake, Marilyn Tink, Kathy Kolynchuk, Vicki Raspa, Maureen Shewchuk and Jane Bullock.
In the finals, Winnipeg defeated Manitoba 78-72; 55-41 (2g-0).
In game one, Winnipeg defeated Manitoba 78-72 as Cheryl Kryluk, a transfer from Lakehead, scored 27. Winnipeg was ahead 39-29 at the half. Bea Dyce added 15, Diana Quartel 13 and Karen Ridd 12. Kryluk said “we played tight. This year, we were expected to do so much and we haven’t handled it well. We’re playing well enough to win.” Manitoba coach Addy Ryngach said Kryluk made the difference. “In the end, Kryluk’s their main person. She’s the one who makes the aggressive plays. Too often, we let down on her defensively.” Esther Johnson led Manitoba with 19 points and 17 rebounds. Cheryl Susinski added 15, Shannon Johanssen 14 and Kelly Picken 10.
In game two, Winnipeg bounced Manitoba 55-41 despite trailing 25-22 at the half. Winnipeg’s tough zone defence shut down Manitoba in the second half. “We decided we would try and make them score from the outside,” said Winnipeg coach Tom Kendall. “We heard they were weak from there, so I took a gamble. It worked very effectively.” Bea Dyce led Winnipeg with 19 points. Cheryl Kryluk added 13, while Diana Quartel tossed in 10 and grabbed 17 boards. Kendall noted the team hasn’t shown a killer instinct. “I’m disappointed by our point total.” Kelly Picken led Manitoba with 12 points, while Cheryl Susinski and Donna Partridge each scored 8. Manitoba coach Addy Ryngach noted that only 13 fouls were called against Winnipeg during the game. “They didn’t call a second foul on Winnipeg until in the second half after 14 minutes.”
Manitoba coaches selected Addy Ryngach of Manitoba as the coach of the year. The nation’s coaches chose Tom Kendall of Winnipeg.
