In the semis, Regina defeated Winnipeg 77-95; 98-85; 93-83 (2g-1). …………………………………………………… In game one, Winnipeg defeated Regina 95-77 as the Cougars played little defence and Matej Maroti, Steve Newton and Kevin Chief scored at will. Stein Cramer and Murray Davidson dominated offensive glass for Wesmen. Winnipeg took 47-41 lead at half. Regina briefly cut lead to four but Winnipeg went on 15-0 run. Maroti finished with 23. Kevin Gilroy led Regina with 18 points and 8 rebounds. …………………………………………………… In game two, Regina won 98-85 as Dale Holmes scored 28. …………………………………………………… In game three, Regina prevailed 93-83 as Kevin Gilroy scored 22.
In the finals, Brandon defeated Regina 86-81; 90-85 (2g-0).
In game one, Brandon edged Regina 86-81. The Bobcats were rusty to start. They were badly out-rebounded and suffered several defensive lapses, while committing 11 turnovers. Regina built a 14-point lead as Kevin Gilroy scored 17 in first half. Brandon rallied to within 49-40 at the half. But the Bobcats cranked up defensive pressure in second half, doubled down on Gilroy, put pressure on perimeter and took 74-72 lead with 5:12 to play. Shawn Gray dominated the defensive glass and finished with 16 points, 15 boards and three assists. Maurice Carter kept drilling threes and driving the lane. Richard Lovelace hit 18 while Jamie Blake came off bench to score 11. Kevin Gilroy led Regina with 28.
In game two, Brandon defeated Regina 90-85 in overtime. In the rugged first half, both teams shot dismally from the floor. Regina hit .361 in the first half 13-36 and 0-5 from arc. The score was knotted at 36 with seconds left on the clock, when Roger Martin fed an open Richard Lovelace who drove the baseline and hit a fadeaway jumper at the buzzer to give Brandon a 38-36 lead. In the second half, with two minutes to go, Brandon’s Shawn Gray fouled out with 23 points, 8 rebounds and 4 blocks and received a standing ovation. Brandon led by three and held on after Regina’s Chad Celaire missed two free throws. Mark Passley missed two free throws for Brandon with the Bobcats ahead by four. Regina came back with 17 seconds on the clock and A.J. Scheppers, who finished with 14 points and 6 rebounds, nailed a three. Regina fouled Martin who hit the first to give Brandon a two-point lead. But Chris Warnecke, who scored 11, missed layup with 0.6 seconds on the clocks but Dale Holmes tipped it in to force overtime, tied at 75. Lovelace owned the overtime. He won the opening tip-off, notched the first bucket and scored 10 of Brandon’s 15 points in overtime, including a circus shot in the lane. Regina hit 22-38 from the line on the night, missing several key free throws down the stretch. Brandon out-rebounded Regina 49-39 and didn’t hit a single three.
