In the semis, Manitoba dumped Regina 98-76; 87-94; 91-71 (2g-1).
In the finals, Brandon swept Manitoba 97-89; 92-84 (2g-0).
In game one, Brandon prevailed 97-89 as Steve Maslek scored 30. “The guy that’s killed us all year and he did
it again today,” said Manitoba coach Rick Suffield. Bobcats coach Jerry Hemmings said “Steve did a really good job on the offensive boards and I thought he did just a tremendous job of finishing off.” Maslek also nabbed 13 boards. “They’re a good team, but I always get fired up when we play good teams,” Maslek said. “I just get lucky.” Manitoba led the entire first half until Joey Vickery hit a three-pointer at the buzzer to put the Bobcats ahead 54-52. The teams swapped leads in the second half until Vickery connected on another trey to put Brandon in front to stay, 80-79. The contest remained tight until Manitoba’s star guard Eric Bridgeland was assessed an intentional foul with 1:01 left. Brandon’s Wayne Bennett made good on his two foul shots to stretch the advantage to 94-89, before Vickery hit his fourth trey to ice it. “What we need right now, when we play (tonight), is we need something a coach can’t coach,” said Suffield. “We’ve just got to get a bit lucky. We wanted to let them know we were here and now we’ve got to come out (tonight) with some character and just get back at our game plan. It worked today. We were very happy with what we did.” Brandon played most of the game without the services of offensive threat Elden Irving, who was in foul trouble early. But Radcliffe Goldbourne came off the bench and filled in admirably, draining all three of his shots from beyond the arc. Vickery scored 14, while Goldbourne and Irving chipped in 13 each. “Radcliffe came in and did a fantastic job,” Maslek said. “He was a big surprise for us.” Paul Bryant led the Bisons with 27. Bridgeland added 20 and Winston Duncan 12.
In game two, Harvey Marshman scored 20 and Joey Vickery 19 to lead the Bobcats to a 92-84 victory. The Bobcats featured 6-9 Steve Maslek, a former University of Pittsburgh Panther, Joey Vickery and Elden Irving.
