In the final, Manitoba nipped Brandon 78-77 as 6-3 guard Terry Garrow hit a baseline jumper that arched over the corner of the backboard, bounced once off the rim and dropped in with 10 seconds to go to give the Bisons the win. Manitoba coach Rick Suffield told the Regina Leader-Post that “I think Dr. J. Garrow’s shot from the corner was unbelievable. I don’t know if it was planned. I had nothing to do with it. You’ll have to ask Terry if that was a planned play.” Garrow said “no it wasn’t. I just knew there wasn’t much time left on the shot clock. So, I had to get it away.” Brandon coach Jerry Hemmings told Canadian Press “that shot took us from the penthouse to the basement.” Courtney Bailey brought the ball down for Brandon, fed it to Huntersville, North Carolina-product John Carson, who missed a shot. Manitoba fumbled the rebound with two seconds to go. Bailey inbounded it to Carson, who was covered by Kaufman, and got off a shot which bounded off the rim. Marvin Russell tipped it in for Brandon but referee Dave Bauman ruled the ball was tipped in after the buzzer. Tournament MVP Tony Kaufman scored 24 for Manitoba. Terry Garrow added 20 and Joe Ogoms 16. Carson led Brandon with 26. Patrick Jebbison added 19 and Courtney Bailey 10. Brandon out-rebounded Manitoba 38-29. John Carson had 12 boards and John Bukich 11. Joe Ogoms led Manitoba with 13 rebounds. Tony Kaufman added 8. The game was tied at 39 at the half. Brandon coach Jerry Hemmings mused about the final shot. “It’s hard to say. I thought from my angle, there could have been a foul on the shot. When John went up, the defensive player hit him right under the chest.” Manitoba coach Rick Suffield noted that “we just had to concentrate and try and block out. We knew were going to be in for a battle on the boards. We tried to some pressure on John (Carson) and tried to be really conscious of Patrick (Jebbison) after a shot.”
