In game one, Brandon clipped Winnipeg 85-75 as Jerry Abernathy scored 13 and grabbed 15 boards. “We knew we had to close off the inside game of the Wesmen,” said Abernathy. Abernathy and Keith Streiter dominated the paint. 6-4 forward Jude Kelly tossed in 28 while Fred Lee hit 16 for Brandon, which shot .510 from the floor. Bob Magel paced Winnipeg with 20. Devon Daley added 17 and Belaineh Deguefe 10. “We might have had eight or 10 chances within 10 feet of the hoop. None of them went in and that really hurt us,” said Winnipeg coach Bruce Enns.
In game two, Brandon defeated Winnipeg 67-63 despite a 22-point effort by Ken Opalko for the Wesmen. Winnipeg was ahead 33-30 as they shot a scorching .520 in the first half but then went five minutes without a bucket early in the second half. “We played well. It appeared we had the game until our shots stopped dropping,” said Opalko. Bob Magel added 14 points for the Wesmen, including 7-21 from the floor and grabbed 9 rebounds. “I had four shots in a row that circled the rim and bounced right back out of the hoop,” Magel noted. Jerry Abernathy paced Brandon with 11 points and 16 rebounds. “Everyone’s a match up out there,” Abernathy noted. “The better the opposition, the better we play. Against poor teams we struggle but against good teams like Winnipeg, we come up big.” Brooklyn-born Fred Lee scored 18 for Brandon, including 6-23 from the floor. Jude Kelly added 12, as did Keith Streiter. Ex-Wesmen Don Jackson pitched in 10. The teams each grabbed 48 rebounds, including 16 by Winnipeg’s Belaineh Deguefe. Brandon outshot Winnipeg from the floor 26-67, as opposed to 25-67. But the Bobcats hit 15-23 from the line, while Manitoba was 13-19.
