In the finals, Manitoba defeated Lakehead 88-75; 78-73 (2g-0).
In the opener, Manitoba defeated Lakehead 88-75 as Martin Riley tossed in 26 points, Grant Watson 16, Cliff Bell 16 and guard Greg Daniels 10. Manitoba outshot Lakehead .480 to .470, out-rebounded them 41-40 and committed 17 turnovers to Lakehead’s 23. “In the first half, they were forcing us to play their game,” Riley said. “We came out more intense in the second half.” Manitoba quickly stretched their lead to 15 and coasted to the easy victory. Lakehead coach Arnie Donovan said his front court let the team down. Jim Zoet scored 22, 6-5 Jeff Bennett 15 and John Zanatta 15.
In game two, Manitoba prevailed 78-73. The Bisons had a 36-26 lead with 3:19 to play in the first half but Lakehead rallied to tie it at 37 at the break. Grant Watson, Martin Riley and Greg Daniels each picked up three fouls in the first half, as did Lakehead’s John Zanatta and Dave Preus. Riley picked up his 4th with 12:39 to play, while Zanatta picked up his fourth with 12:18 to play. Lakehead took a 54-53 lead midway through the half as Manitoba’s John Taylor picked up his fourth. Manitoba moved ahead 61-60 with 7:59 to play as Preus picked up his fourth. With 2:22 to play, Manitoba was ahead 73-71 when Watson picked up his fourth. With 1:28 to play and the Bisons leading 75-73, Preus fouled out. Manitoba slowed the game to a crawl and held on for the victory. “If you didn’t have a guy 7-foot tall, you can’t expect to match them,” said Lakehead’s Arnie Donovan. Riley led the way for the Bisons with 25 points, including 12-16 from the floor. Daniels added 22 including 11-of-16 from the floor. Watson scored 11 and nabbed 11 boards. Cliff Bell scored 17 and grabbed 17 rebounds. Jeff Bennett led Lakehead with 23. John Zanatta added 15, Dave Preus 10 and Jim Grisim 10. Jim Zoet scored 12 and nabbed 17 boards. Manitoba outshot Lakehead .520 to .420. “It was a magnificent game – just super,” said Manitoba coach Hunter. “The game was just what we needed. Both teams were extended to the limit tonight. Every play in the last ten minutes was a turning point.”
After the season, Regina coach Gene Rizak announced that he was taking a one-year sabbatical to complete a PhD at Waterloo.
