The 2nd-seeded Queen’s Gaels edged the 7th-seeded Winnipeg Wesmen 77-76. The Wesmen led 20-16 after one quarter and by 10 early in the second frame. But the Gaels ripped off a 15-0 run and took a 43-35 lead at the half on a buzzer-beating trey by Cameron Bett. The Wesmen took a 47-45 lead in the third but the Gaels countered with an 8-0 run and took a 65-61 lead after three quarters. The Wesmen trailed by six with 2 minutes to play and ripped off a 5-0 run to draw within one. But the Gaels pulled out the win when Cole Syllas blocked an Elijah Mensah trey at the buzzer. We were able to turn them over and made enough plays in the end. It was really our defence in the third and early fourth quarters that gave us the lead and that was the difference today.” The Gee-Gees led 8-0 early and 20-18, 38-35 and 55-48 at the quarters. In the final, the miraculous run of the 8th-seeded Laval Rouge et Or was capped by a 77-71 win over the 2nd-seeded Queen’s Gaels. It marked the first title garnered by a French-language university and just the third crown notched by an RSEQ institution. The Rouge et Or notched a 16-0 run as they took a 24-17 lead after one quarter. The Gaels led 43-39 at the half. But the Rouge et Or superior speed began having an effect as they took a 57-56 lead after three quarters. Steven Tennant pilfered the ball for a runout dunk to give the Gaels a 69-68 lead with 1:37 to play. But Ismael Diouf notched a putback to give the Rouge et Or a 70-69 lead. Steeve Joseph added a bucket to make it 72-69 and the Rouge et Or pulled out the win. Laval coach Nathan Grant told Canadian Press that his team always rises to challenges from a superior team. Gaels coach Steph Barrie said “the disappointment is at the forefront right now and I’m sure we’ll have a lot of time in the next little bit to look at the historical perspective and all the pride and will rise to the forefront.” Ismael Diouf was chosen player of the game for the Rouge et Or, while Cole Syllas earned the laurels for the Gaels.
