Calgary took command with a decisive 12-3 run in the third quarter after the Martlets had drawn within one. Dino Kourtney Oss said “it always just starts with defence for me. My offence was a little slow to start with a few missed short bunnies, so I just focused on rebounding, kicking out to shooters, attacking and always playing with pace and getting stops on defence. I’ve just been feeling more confident (since the semester break). Feeling more confident playing with my teammates and finding my place more on offence instead of just defensively.” Teammate Pollyanna Storie said “this feels amazing. As a team, we’ve never (won the opening game at nationals) in the three times we’ve been here, but also (for the program) it hasn’t happened in a long time, so I’m just really proud we can do that after the run from CanWest. … You can’t treat these games differently than in-season. We know what we’ve been doing well in playoffs, so we just wanted to continue that.” Dinos coach Sarah Besselink said “our defence was the difference maker for us, again. Early on, (McGill’s) off-ball movement gave us some issues and in order to simplify that – I had faith that we were able to contain – so we started switching more and it proved to work. Offensively, I thought we attacked their ball-screen defence very well, and that was a difference maker. It opened things up and obviously Kourtney was fantastic today.” Kourtney Oss was chosen player of the game for the Dinos, while Emilia Diaz-Ruiz earned the laurels for the Martlets. Kourtney Oss paced the Dinos with 18 on 9-21 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 0-1 from the line, 17 boards, 4 blocks and 2 steals. Huskies coach Lisa Thomaidis said “I think we would have had a bigger lead had we been able to make our free throws, just not shooting well from the line and even from the three. But Thankfully our defense held us in it and that’s what the difference was. I think if we can defend like that and we can have a bit better shooting night, then we’ll give ourselves a chance no matter who we’re playing against.” Gage Grassick was chosen player of the game for the Huskies, while Sara Toneguzzi earned the laurels for the Thunderbirds. Kylee Speedy was chosen player of the game for the Reds, while Kourtney Oss earned the laurels for the Dinos. Dinos coach Sarah Besselink said “that’s super tough team. They stuck to their game plan. Their post player (Katie Butts) got a foul in the first quarter so then they played the whole first quarter without her and the gameplan was to get the ball inside. Not having defended that in the first, I think we took some time to adjust to her physicality and the way that she seals on stuff. We just didn’t adjust in time; they put the ball inside and that was the difference. … Fight has been our motto since we’ve been on this run here. Overall, we did a pretty good job defensively – just couldn’t capitalize on our turnovers.” Katie Butts paced the Reds with 20 on 9-13 from the floor, 2-4 from the line, 6 boards and 2 assists. Kylee Speedy added 16 on 5-9 from the floor, 4-6 from the arc, 2-6 from the line, 3 assists and 3 steals. Ella Murphy Wiebe was chosen player of the game for the Huskies, while Brinly Holt earned the laurels for the Rouge et Or. “It feels amazing [to be back in the final],” said Murphy Wiebe. “This game was really tough and there were points in it where we weren’t up like we normally are. So I’m just really grateful that my team was always there being supportive and just believing in us, believing in me, and we got it done so I’m so happy.” Huskies coach Lisa Thomaidis said “their defense was incredible, really. I thought Ella opened up so strong and then they adjusted and then took away our ball screen game and just seemed to be causing us fits. We couldn’t get anything easy for the longest time. Thankfully, our defense was able to hold us. And then Téa hit the dagger when we most needed it, so that was huge.” Thomaidis added that Murphy Wiebe “was fantastic at the offensive end, clearl. What she did at the defensive end was probably as impactful. To be able to switch her onto a guard when they were isoing and in the ball screen for her to get down and defend and just challenge at the rim and not foul. I mean, that’s so hard. You have to be such an amazing athlete to do that, and so she did. That was really critical.” Ella Murphy Wiebe paced the Huskies with 26 on 8-14 from the floor, 10-14 from the line and 16 boards. Maya Flindall added 9 on 3-12 from the floor, 0-3 from the arc, 3-4 from the line and 5 boards. Tea DeMong notched 9 on 3-11 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 2-4 from the line and 11 boards. Kourtney Oss was chosen player of the game for the Dinos, while Sabrine Khelifi earned the laurels for the Rouge et Or. “I’m very proud of this team,” Dinos coach Sarah Besselink said. “The theme today was ’empty the tank’ – give it everything you’ve got. X’s and O’s wise, it’s a tight turnaround, so really it was just who wanted it more and luckily we came out on top.” Dino Amelie Collin said “we showed a lot of character today after a tough semifinal yesterday. It would have been easy to just hang our heads and not show up, but truly, everyone came in ready to compete. The intensity, the effort and the way we defended together reflects the identity we’ve built together as a team. So yeah, getting the win and finishing with a medal says a lot.” Besselink said “they just didn’t really have a matchup for her (Oss). “She is a very tough matchup. Isolating her at the elbow, slowing things down and telling her to go to work ended up working.” Oss said “it feels amazing. In the final, the 5th-seeded Saskatchewan Huskies captured their second consecutive national title by defeating the 2nd-seeded New Brunswick Reds 77-68 after leading 25-13, 44-32 and 52-50 at the quarters. Huskies coach Lisa Thomaidis said “I’m just floored to be able to do this and to know how hard it is to do it and then to do it back-to-back. To overcome that loss in the [Canada West] semi-final and be able to bounce back and know that we were capable is really special. We had to do it a different way for sure. Our offense struggled our first two days and I thought our defense got us through. Then today offense got going, but then we slowed down that third quarter, but credit to UNB, they made some adjustments and that slowed us down. I thought just our experience showed we didn’t get too rattled. We’ve got some of the best players in the country on our team, so they’re going to make plays when the going’s tough. So credit to them, they were incredible.” Tournament MVP Ella Murphy Wiebe said “well, for starters, this is my last year, so I’m feeling a lot of emotions right now, and I’m just really proud of our team. We’ve worked so hard to get to where we are, and to go back-to-back says something, and I’m just so proud of us. I’m lucky to be coached by the best coaches in Canada and in the world, so I’m just really grateful to be surrounded by great people.” Gage Grassick said “I think the five of us who are graduating this year have set so many standards and I guess you can say records throughout our careers and I think it is a testament of Lisa and the coaching staff. It’s been an absolute honor and privilege to play for her for the past six years and I couldn’t have been more grateful and I wouldn’t have changed it for the world. At the end of the day it comes down to her and what she develops in the program.” Logan Reider was chosen player of the game for the Huskies, while Kylie Speedy earned the laurels for the Reds.
