In the quarterfinals, held in Charlottetown, defending champ Laurentian dumped Laval 61-50 as CIAU player of the year Sue Stewart scored 19. Louise Boulanger added 14. All-Canadian Chantal Denis led Laval with 16. Chantale Cantin added 12. “We played real well in the first half and then kind of played well enough to win the second half,” said Laurentian coach Peter Ennis.
Winnipeg edged New Brunswick 72-69. The Red Bloomers led by as many as 8 in the second half but folded their tents down the stretch. Red Bloomers coach Clair Mitton told The Brunswickan that “we lost a very intense, hard-fought battle. It was an emotional loss after playing as well as we did.”
Toronto whipped Manitoba 76-60 as freshman Tina Ellison scored 21. Anne Schimnowski led Manitoba with 24. Blues coach Michelle Belanger said a decision to switch to a zone defence, from man-to-man, when the Bisons took a 44-43 lead with 16 minutes to play, proved the difference. “When we switched from a man-to-man to a zone, we were quite effective. We worked hard and controlled the boards. Our offence was outstanding.” Belanger told The Varsity that “we played very well, played with confidence and authority and were successful.”
In the last quarterfinal, the top-seeded Victoria Vikings whipped the 8th-seeded host Prince Edward Island Panthers 69-39. The Panthers led for the first 12 minutes of play, urged on by a large hometown crowd. Victoria took over 32-24 at the half and used a size advantage to wear down the smaller Island team. “I’m glad that’s over,” Vikes coach Kathy Shields said. Kathleen Keats led the Vikes with 15. Jenny Sutton added 14, Heather Boatz 12, along with 14 rebounds, Tara Gallaway 7, Sue Tomio 6, Audrey Dennison 6, Chris Van Aert 6, Cherie Birtwhistle 2 and Kirstine Brown 1, while Kerri-Ann Butterworth, Tamara Carruthers and Rachel Sexon were scoreless. Lori Knickle led the Panthers with 16. D Coles added 9, C Lawlor 8, J Dunn 3 and T Jones 3, while H Campbell, J Dickinson, R Lang, T Little, A Nichols, A Sharman and S Shive were scoreless.
In the semis, Victoria crushed Toronto 73-55. The Vikes dominated the paint. Varsity Blues guard Joan Stock said getting the ball inside against the Vikes was almost impossible. “Their wing players are so big and quick, sometimes we couldn’t even see (All-Canadian centre Denise Scott), much less get the ball to her.” Blues coach Michele Belanger told the Varsity that “Vic is a pretty big team, easily the best in the tournament. We had a pretty good first half but we couldn’t buy a basket in the second half. We couldn’t get the ball inside to Denise (Scott). We shot 16 per cent, so I can’t say I was that disappointed that we lost by only 18 points.” Jenny Sutton paced the Vikings with 18. Tara Gallaway added 13, Heather Bohez 10, Kathy Keats 9, Audrey Dennison 8, Sue Tomio 8, Chris Van Aert 5 and Cherie Birtwhistle 2, while Kirstine Brown, Kerri-Anne Butterworth, Tamara Carruthers and Rachel Sexon were scoreless. Joan Stock led the Varsity Blues with 16. T Allison added 12, Denise Scott 10, H Marlborough 8, P Blumenthal 5, L Pinkney 2 and Y Spiczynski 2, while K Johnson, R Katocs, C Brown and S Brown were scoreless.
In the other semi, Winnipeg dumped Laurentian 81-72 as Sandra Carroll repeatedly attacked off the dribble for 26 points. “I just looked for the gaps and tried to get through any way I could,” she said. “I think we knew that the team that stayed hot would win, and luckily it was us.”
In the bronze medal match, Laurentian defeated Toronto 82-60. Toronto led 42-38 at the half. Joan Stock and Denise Scott each scored 17 to lead Toronto. “We had a horrendous second half,” Blues coach Michele Belanger told The Varsity. “We were making a lot of errors and our shooting percentage was poor. We couldn’t get the ball inside to (6-foot-4 centre Denise Scott). They walked all over us in the second half. I don’t know why we had the letdown. Maybe we relaxed a bit when we took the lead. Laurentian picked up the beat and they wanted it more than we did. It’s too bad because we really felt that the bronze was in our grasp. I think it was more a case of us losing than
Laurentian winning.”
In the final, Victoria defeated Winnipeg 64-51 as tourney MVP Jenny Sutton scored 12 and grabbed 11 rebounds. “You just can’t ask for anything more than this,” the fifth year forward noted. Vikes coach Kathy Shields called it “a Cinderella finish for us.” Winnipeg hung with the Vikings for most of the affair before the Vikings command down the stretch by dominating the boards. Victoria led 33-32 at the half. Kathleen Keats paced the Vikings with 16. Audrey Dennison notched 11, Tara Gallaway 10, Sue Tomio 7, Chris Van Aert 6 and Cherie Birtwhistle 2, while Heather Bohez, Kirstine Brown, Kerri-Anne Butterworth, Tamara Carruthers and Rachel Sexton were scoreless. Victoria finished (33-0) on the season. Sandra Carroll paced Winnipeg with 20. Michelle Chambers added 6, Pam Flick 6, J Rock 6, Terri Martin 5, Andrea Hutchens 4 and Larisa Waschuk 2, while Karen Kubler, S Telke and S Myers were scoreless.
