Hosted by Guelph, the seedings for the tournament were based on the previous year’s results.
In the quarterfinals, the 3rd-seeded New Brunswick Red Bloomers defeated the 4th-seeded Winnipeg Wesmenettes 72-57 as Kim Hanson scored 28, including 16 in the first half. Joyce Pederson added 12, Janet Goggin 10, Sheppard 8, Blumenfeld 7, Scott 2, Robbins 2, Maxwell 2 and Gillies 1. The Red Bloomers hit 6-12 from the line. Kathy Dubesky led Winnipeg with 13. Anne Thompson added 12, Thompson 7, Stitt 6, Sharratt 6, Perkins 6 and MacPhail 2. The Wesmenettes hit 11-26 from the line. UNB led 42-28 at the half and romped 72-57. The Varsity Reds fullcourt press thoroughly rattled the Wesmenettes. “We just couldn’t get the ball over centre court enough,” said Winnipeg coach Vic Pruden. ‘Our guards couldn’t handle the pressure early and we got down and could not catch up …we were too tight and not aggressive enough … inexperience.”
In the other quarterfinal, the 2nd-seeded Victoria Vikings thrashed the 6th-seeded host Guelph Gryphons 66-37 after leading 37-17 at the half. Marg Mainwaring led the Vikings with 16. Lorna McHattie added 9, Edna Ritchie 8, Laury Grimston 6, Jan Turner 6, Theresa Marcin 6, Jan Nowell 5, Leslie Godfrey 4, Mary Anne Longmore 4, Lorraine Mosher 2 and Cathy Auburn 2, while Ronnie Hind was scoreless. Victoria shot .515 from the floor. Sue Key led Guelph with 11. J Flinlin added 4, J Antonio 5, M Willis 4, M Proc 3, J Greaves 2 and H Sojczynski 2, while P Lesuer, A Byfalam, P Stoddard, J Buckland and M Hartman were scoreless.
In the semis, the 3rd-seeded New Brunswick Red Bloomers nipped the 2nd-seeded Victoria Vikings 62-59 despite trailing by nine with 10 minutes to play. Kim Hansen led the Red Bloomers with 14, including nine in the second half rally. Janet Goggin added 12, Scott 8, Sylvia Blumenfeld 8, P Sheppard 6, C Maxwell 6, Joyce Pederson 4 and Robbins 4, while J Cull, J Irvine, J Gillies and K Rice were scoreless. The Red Bloomers hit 14-24 from the line. Marg Mainwaring paced the Vikings with 16. Mairi Anne Longmore added 12, Leslie Godfrey 9, Lorna McHattie 7, Cathy Auburn 7, Laury Grimston 4, Edna Ritchie 4 and Ronni Hind 2. The Vikings also included Jan Turner, Jan Nowell, Theresa Marcin and Lorraine Mosher. The Vikings hit 2-16 from the line. Victoria led 38-28 at the half and by as many as 14 in the second half as the Red Bloomers struggled to resolve the Vikings zone.
In the other semi, the top-seeded Laurentian Voyageurs thumped the 5th-seeded Laval Rouge et Or 64-40 as Eileen Galuska scored 17, Donna Roman 12 and Michelle Belanger 10. The Voyageurs led 34-17 at the half. Helene Sampson led Laval with 12.
In the bronze medal qualifier, Laval defeated Guelph 66-52. The Gryphons (coached by Valerie Freeman, manager Cyndy Anderson) included Sue Kaye, Peggy LeSuer, Jane Greaves, Angela Baytalan, Halinka Sojczynski, Peggy Stoddert, Jill Finlin, Mary Proc, Joanne Brakland, Marg Uglig, Judy Antonio and Meran Hartman.
In the bronze medal match, Winnipeg defeated Laval 66-61 as Dori McPhail scored 14, Anne Thompson 11, Nancy Sharratt 11 and Ingrid Stitt 10. The Rouge et Or (coached by Michel Boivin, assisted by Edith Boivin, manager Paule Fremont) included Monique Parent, Hélene Samson, Sylvie Rompré, Lise Picard, Hélene Belanger, Denise Lagagé, Roberta Condy, Judith Brownrigg, Hélene Tanguay, Hélene Morin, Carole Brault, Suzanne Robert and Louise Gagnon.
In the final, the top-seeded Laurentian Voyageurs defeated the 3rd-seeded New Brunswick Red Bloomers 50-42. Trailing for the most of the game, and by 28-23 at the break, the Vees rallied in the second-half after a pair of star Red Bloomers fouled out midway through the half, allowing Laurentian to slowly re-assert its dominance. UNB was ahead 28-23 at the half was Kim Hanson dominated the paint scoring 16 points. But the Vees, primarily defender Donna Roman, shut Hanson down in the second half, holding her to only four points and when the Red Bloomers Joyce Pedersen fouled out with 14 minutes remaining in the game and Janet Goggin joined her on the pines with seven minutes to go, the contest was all but decided. The Vees offensive attack was evenly distributed as Kathy Williams hit for 14 points, including five field goals in the second half, Karen Banfield added 12, Kathy Jennings 12 Michelle Belanger 11, post Eileen Galuska 9, while nabbing 12 rebounds, and Donna Roman 4. Kim Hanson led the Red Bloomers with 20. Goggin added 9, Blumenfeld 8, Maxwell 6, Sheppard 2, Pedersen 2 and Scott 2. Voyageurs coach Norm Vickery told The Lambda that his team had “no stars, just some hard-working people.” The Red Bloomers were whistled for 14 fouls, to the Voyageurs’ 6. Red Bloomers coach Phil Wright told The Brunswickan that he was “immensely proud. The girls won with style and lost with grace.”
