        Hosted by the University of Winnipeg, the opening round featured the OWIAA champ University of Western Ontario Mustangs against McGill Super Squaws. The Ontario representatives won 56-41 after taking a 30-22 halftime lead. Beth Johnson scored 15 and Leann Ghent 10. The Quebec champs were led by Sylvia Sweeney’s 21 points. Jean MacDonell added 7.

        In the semis, the U.B.C. Thunderbirds defeated the Western Mustangs 57-33 as Bev Barnes scored 14, Carol Turney 14, Vicki Williams 10. Liz Silcott and Nora Ballantyne each nabbed 7 rebounds. The T’birds led 35-9 at the half as their full-court press rattled Western. Western was led by Rose Johnston 11, Beth Johnson 12. Debbie Shogun grabbed 9 rebounds.

        In other semi, the New Brunswick Red Bloomers took clipped the host Winnipeg Wesmen 75-64. The Red Bloomers were led by Janet Proude 19 points and 8 rebounds. Joyce Douthwright added 19, along with 11 steals, Marilyn Watts 12, Janet Goggin 8, Kathy Donavan 8, Kim Hansen 7 and Debra Holts 2, while Anne Fenety, Linda Bicknell, Dawn Wishart, Joyde Pederson and Barb Lanning were scoreless. The Wesmen were paced by Angie Johnson 21 and 16 rebounds. Barb Maynes added 15, Marg Penning 12, Rita Askinis 6, Darlene Bonney 4, Bev Sauer 4 and Holly Reader 2, while Yvonne Penning and Shirley Taylor were scoreless. UNB was ahead 24-19 in the first half but Angie Johnson and Barb Maynes rallied Winnipeg to knot the score at 30. The Red Bloomers led 38-36 at the half. Winnipeg led 61-60 but the Red Bloomers took command down the stretch. UNB shot 31-64 (.480) from the floor and 13-18 (.700) from the line. Winnipeg shot 24-58 (.410) from the floor and 16-25 (.640) from the line.

        In the consolation round, Winnipeg defeated McGill 58-38 as Bev Sauer scored 14, Beth Johnston 12, Marg penning 9, Rita Askinis 8, Holly Reader 6, Darlene Bonney 4, Barb Maynes 3 and Yvonne Penning 2, while Shirley Taylor was scoreless. Sylvia Sweeney paced the Martlets with 19. Jean MacDonnell added 10, Vicki Row 5, Louise Benoit 2, Yolande Deschamps 1 and Judy Stafford 1, while Gail Flaherty, Leah Auclair, Debbie Wright and Marg Lanning were scoreless. The Martlets (coached by Jan Meyer) also included Gail Small.

        It is unclear whether Western and Winnipeg played a bronze medal match.

        In the final, the U.B.C. Thunderbirds dumped the New Brunswick Red Bloomers 67-55. The Thunderbirds took a 10-point lead early and although New Brunswick rallied, U.B.C. maintained control down the stretch. “They got it down to four points once, 23-19,” said U.B.C. coach Ron Thorsen. “But we started to press and got it back up to 10 and they just couldn’t seem to decrease it from there.” Carol Turney led U.B.C. with 32. Liz Silcott added 15, Bev Barnes 8, Nora Ballantyne 5, Judi Kent 3, Vicki Williams 2 and Kathy Burdett 1, while Penny Sinden, Louisa Zerbe, Rose Sebellin and Doreen Davidson were scoreless. The Thunderbirds were a young team, comprised of three freshman, three sophs and one junior. They pressed for most of the contest and led by 11 in the first half. UBC out-rebounded UNB 39-33 with Nora Ballantyne and Carol Turney each grabbing 8. Janet Proude paced the Red Bloomers with 24, along with 15 boards. Kim Hansen scored 14, Joyce Douthwright 6, Marilyn Watts 6, Kathy Donovan 2 and Anne Fenety 1, while Barb Lanning, Debbie Holts, Janet Goggin, Linda Bicknell, Joyce Pedersen and Dawn Wishart were scoreless. “It sure is nice to be able to take home that trophy again,” said Thorsen. “When we came here, we were not too confident. We had heard that a lot of the teams had improved and great deal and we have a lot of inexperience on the floor. In fact, our inexperience showed up in tonight’s game in places.” UBC outshot the Red Bloomers .428 to .364. UBC hit 20-29 from the line, while UNB was 13-21. UBC outrebounded the Red Bloomers 32-25.
