With Western leading 50-47 with two and half minutes to play, Lee drained a jumper from the perimeter and then hit a layup on a beautiful pass from Douthright as the Red Bloomers took a 51-50 lead. UNB then stole the ball and held it for a minute before Lee was intentionally fouled and hit both free throws to give the Red Bloomers a three-point lead. Douthwright forced a turnover and Lesley Olmstead was foul and she hit the front end of a one-and-one with 30 seconds to play. Beth Johnson responded with a bucket for Western to trim the lead to 54-52 but Douthright iced it by hitting a free throw. Karen Lee led the Red Bloomers with 18. Joyce Douthwright added 16, along with 0 boards, Sue MacDonald 6, Leslie Olmstead 6, Louise Benoit 4, Sandy Humes 3, Ann Fenety 2 and Marily Watts 2, while Det MacDonald and Pat Bastarche were scoreless.         In the final, held in Saskatoon, the U.B.C. Leslie Olmstead added 16, Marilyn Watts 11, Joyce Douthwright 7, Ann Fenety 4 and Sandy Humes 4. “New Brunswick is an offence minded-team team,” said U.B.C. coach Norm Vickery, born in Taber, Alta. “I think they scored more points against us than any team in the past few years. We choked in the second half. The girls started to stand around to protect our lead and no matter what I did, they wouldn’t start running.” U.B.C. had been ahead 40-17 in the first half and 46-28 at the break but ran into foul trouble in the second half. Lee got hot for the Red Bloomers and hit two free throws and two buckets to cut the margin to 74-67. Marilyn Watts added a field goal to trim the margin even further with 15 seconds to play. Douthright stole the ball with 10 seconds to play but missed the bucket that would have trimmed it further. “Terri McGivern, Debbie Phelan and Bev Barnes, our top forwards, fouled out, and both our guards were playing with four fouls,” Vickery noted.” “New Brunswick went to the line with the bonus and began catching up. But Wendy Grant came through two free throws and a basket near the end when we needed the points.” U.B.C. hit 29-67 (.430) from the floor, while UNB was 22-53 (.410). UBC committed 26 fouls, and UNB 19. UBC out-rebounded the Red Bloomers 39-28 with Barnes nabbed 14.
