“The Bronze Baby is awarded annually to the CIAU Women’s Basketball Champions. The trophy dates back to 1922 when it was donated by the Student’s Council of McGill University. Until 1970, the Women’s Interuniversity Athletic Union in Quebec and Ontario awarded the Bronze Baby to their conference championship team. In 1971, the WIAU was dissolved as a conference and the trophy was retired and returned to the donor, McGill University. McGill students then offered ‘her’ to the Canadian Women’s Interuniversity Athletic Union in June 1972. The figure is a replica of a statue that was in the grounds of Dunfermline College of Physical Education in Scotland and is a copy of a trophy competed for by the High Schools of Dundee. The winners of the trophy from 1923 until 1971 are recorded on the old base at McGill University.”
The CWIAU formed in December, 1969, Western teams wanted a national play-off but Eastern teams resisted, preferring to maintain existing conference championship as goal. WCIAA drafted a proposal in May 1969, circulated it to other schools. At December-69, meetings, CWIAU was formed “to provide a structure thru which Canadian national intercollegiate championships for women may be encouraged and conducted.”
