After the season, Novell Thomas resigned after nine years at the helm of the Brandon Bobcats. “There is never a good time to say good-bye, especially when you are saying good-bye to great people, but I am stepping down for family reasons and will be moving back to B.C.,” Thomas said. Thomas was replaced by 2019-20 interim Queen’s coach James Bambury. He was also coach of the RMC Paladins for two seasons and spent three seasons at the helm of Leed Metropolitan University and Leeds Carnegie Basketball Club in England. His resume also included seven years as an assistant coach with the Gaels. Brandon athletic director Russ Paddock said “James has a great mix of experience, having coached women’s basketball that includes a stint in Europe and both as a head coach and full-time assistant coach in U SPORTS. He brings a reputation as being an excellent teacher of skills and has had a lot of success leading recruitment efforts at Queens.”
U.B.C. coach Deb Huband announced that she was retiring after 27 years at the Thunderbirds helm. During her tenure, she led the the T-Birds to three national titles (2003-04, ’05-06, ’07-08) and four conference championships (2006-07, ’07-08, ’11-12, ’14-15) while also claiming both the Canada West and U SPORTS Coach of the year award in 2003-04. “Coaching at UBC has been a privilege and I am extremely proud of our women’s basketball program, the staff and the players,” Huband said. “Coaching has provided me with an avenue to explore my competitive nature, passion for sport, love of teaching and enjoyment of the team environment. However, the most cherished aspect is the relationship with the athletes and supporting their growth through our treasured time together. I want to thank the athletes for their trust, loyalty and commitment, and I feel enriched to have taken this journey together.” Huband notched 344 wins over her T-Birds career. Prior to that, she was a QUAA all-star in her rookie season, before moving to Bishop’s in Lennoxville, Que., where she captained the Gaiters to three consecutive QUAA titles from 1977-80. She was a three-time CIAU All-Canadian and was honoured as the Bishop’s Female Athlete of the Year three times. She was the starting point guard on the Canadian senior women’s team that finished fourth at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. She was also the starting point guard of the bronze medal-winning world championship teams in ’79 and ’86. She was also the assistant coach for the senior team that competed at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, Australia. Huband also spent three years as an assistant at uOttawa and was the mentor coach of the Cadette women’s team that toiled at the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship in France. She helped guide Canada to a silver medal at the 1999 Pan American Games and was the head coach of Canada’s squad at the 2001 Summer Universiade in Korea. Huband was replaced at the U.B.C. helm by five-year York coach Erin McAleenan. “I am honoured and excited to be taking over the UBC Thunderbirds Women’s Basketball program,” said McAleenan. “When I first heard about the position, I was very intrigued at the opportunity to work at one of the top ranked universities in the country and in an athletic department that exudes excellence. Throughout the process, it became clear that UBC is the best fit for me. Here I can continue to develop young women through sport while pursuing success at the highest level. I look forward to building on the tremendous legacy that Deb Huband has left.” McAleenan was the lead assistant for the Canadian junior national team that won silver at the 2018 FIBA Americas Women’s Championship in Mexico City, as well as an assistant for the U19 team that finished sixth at the 2019 FIBA Women’s World Basketball Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. She was also an assistant with the Canadian cadette women’s team in 2015, coach of Alberta’s U17 Canada Summer Games team in 2013 and an assistant for Canada’s Pan Am Games team in 2011. McAleenan toiled for Acadia between 1999-2003 and later served as coach of the University Lethbridge for three seasons.
Victoria announced that interim coach Shalie Dheensaw would be replaced by U.B.C. lead assistant Carrie Watts. Vikes athletic director Clint Hamilton said “Carrie’s experience contributing to national championship success as a player and coach, combined with her national team playing experience, leave her well-positioned to lead our Vikes program. Evidenced by a strong commitment to coaching leadership and growth, Carrie significantly impacted her previous role, growing alumni and community engagement.” As a player, Watts led UBC to the 2004 U SPORTS championship, the school’s first title in 30 years at the time. That season she was recognized as a Canada West all-star, second-team U SPORTS all-Canadian and U SPORTS Defensive Player of the Year before taking home championship MVP honours. Following her UBC playing career, Watts joined the Canadian senior women’s national team (2005-07) and competed at the 2006 World Championships and the 2007 Pan-American Games. Watts also served six stints as coach Basketball BC’s U15 and U17 provincial teams, leading to back-to-back bronze medals at the U15 National Championships in 2010 and 2011. She also served as the assistant for Team Canada at the 2019 FISU Summer Universiade.
