Vikes coach Dani Sinclair said “when we are good offensively is when the ball is moving and we are tough to defend because we have five people at any time that can score. We shot the ball really well tonight and that came from our ball movement. I’m most proud of our defence tonight because that’s something that hasn’t always been a strength of ours, that’s hopefully something we can build on moving into next weekend.” Cascades coach Al Tuchscherer said “UVic came out with a lot of energy tonight and were really motivated. We knew they were going to execute and their ball screen offence was first-rate, everything we tried to do they picked apart. They dictated the pace of the game and the better team won.” Sinclair said Amira Giannattasio was exceptional. “She is special. When you have to defend our other guards and not just zero in on her, it’s tough because as soon as you start to guard her tighter, Kristy [Gallagher] or Calli McMillan can find a lane. She is absolutely a special player that has one focus and that is getting the team to win.” Tuchscherer praised the efforts of graduating forward Shayna Littman. “Shayna has been in our program for six years, with a redshirt year, and she’s been a warrior for us throughout her career. She never gave up and I’m proud of her for that.” The Vikes took a 39-22 lead but the Cascades rallied with a 12-0 run to draw within five but that was close as they could come. “They made a little run in the second quarter and are a tough, veteran team,” said Sinclair. “We knew they weren’t going to back down at any point and we re-asserted that at halftime. They are very dominant with Claggett and Littman inside, but we had a bunch of our girls do a really nice job of rebounding and making everything tough for them.” Tuchscherer said Vikes guard Katie Langdon “was a real difference-maker tonight – she was 7-of-7 in the first half, and we didn’t really expect that from her. That kind of got us on our heels, and when they’re scoring inside and outside, it’s pretty tough.” Littman said “I thought it was pretty key for us to go on that run in the second quarter. It kept us in the game, and at halftime I felt pretty good about where we were at. We’d been so poor defensively . . . and I thought if we tightened things up in the second half, we had a chance. But they came out and hit us hard again.” Amira Giannattasio paced the Vikes with 33 on 12-21 from the floor, 3-9 from the arc, 6-7 from the line, 10 boards, 2 assists and 3 steals. The Pandas led 11-7 after one quarter. The Spartans led 24-23 at the half. The Pandas led 43-38 after three quarters. The Spartans clamped down on defence in the fourth quarter, holding Alberta to 5 points over the first 6 minutes. Tessa Ratzlaff hit a jumper to knot the score at 48 and then Tessa Needham nailed a jumper to give the Spartans a 50-48 with four minutes to play. They soon led by 12 as the Pandas folded their tents down the stretch. “This whole week has been about tempo,” said Spartans coach Cheryl Jean-Paul. “I think the first quarter was a bit frantic and I think both teams played with a lot of nerves, but we eventually settled into the game. Playing at our tempo for the entire game really allowed us to break out in the fourth quarter. Alberta is a tough team to play against. They’re so big, they’re long and they’re physical. Those are things that we’ve had to play against all season long. We’ve just had some very critical weekends in the past semester to get us ready for this. I think our team was ready to battle and that’s what they did. It’s going to be a battle tomorrow and we know it’s going to be a very difficult challenge to get two in a row against Alberta, but it’s nice to already have half the job done.” Kayla Gordon paced the Spartans with 20 on 8-13 from the floor, 4-6 from the line, 4 boards and 4 assists. Tessa Ratzlaff added 15 on 7-14 from the floor, 1-2 from the line and 8 boards. Ashleigh Barnes scored 8 on 3-8 from the floor, 2-2 from the line and 6 boards. The Spartans hit 24-55 (.436) from the floor, 2-5 (.400) from the arc and 12-16 from the line, while garnering 37 boards, including 11 on the offensive glass, 23 assists, 6 steals, 1 block, 20 turnovers and 14 fouls. The Spartans led 18-15 after one quarter. The score was knotted at 31 at the half. The Spartans led 48-46 after three quarters. The Spartans held on for the win as Kayla Gordon and Tessa Ratzlaff each hit a pair of free throws in the final 20 secons, while Ratzlaff nabbed a critical offensive board with 6 seconds to play. But Emma Ratzlaff pilfered the ball for a runout layup and Jessie Brown nailed a trey to knot the score at the half. The Spartans opened the third quarter with a 6-0 run but the Pandas clawed to within 66-64 down the stretch before the Spartans iced the win at the line. Spartans coach Cheryl Jean-Paul said “I thought we did a great job of responding to their momentum pushes and their big shots. I don’t think we ever unraveled to the point where we were out of control. Yesterday, it was about tempo and today they tried to slow us down with their press and I thought we stayed disciplined enough to take care of the press. It was nice to see some people hit some shots today that weren’t dropping for them yesterday. I just thought there were really strong stretches of composure and that’s what you need to win big games. … Those two years when we went to split divisions, those three (Emma Ratzlaff, Kayla Gordon and Jessie Brown) had to learn a lot of hard lessons. They had to go up against all-stars every weekend and they had to go against a ranked team almost every other weekend. I think the benefits are that now they’re playing like all-stars and we’re playing like a ranked team. I wouldn’t change those years for anything because I think it really set the tone for what we’re achieving right now.” Jessie Brown paced the Spartans with 21 on 7-13 from the floor, 4-7 from the arc, 3-4 from the line and 3 boards. Tessa Ratzlaff added 18 on 8-16 from the floor, 2-2 from the line, 6 boards and 2 assists. Kayla Gordon notched 17 on 5-11 from the floor, 7-8 from the line, 12 boards and 3 assists. Kianna Wiens added 2 on 1-3 from the floor and 0-1 from the arc, while Julia Marshall, Tessa Needham, Lucy Golubic, Breanna Cabuco and Teanna Bradshaw were scoreless. Marshall dished 3 assists.         In the last quarterfinal series, the 4th-seeded University of Calgary Dinos defeated the 5th-seeded Victoria Vikes 105-49; 80-61 (2g-0). …………………………………………………… In game one, Calgary clocked Victoria 105-49 after leading 25-10, 51-22 and 82-37 at the quarters. The Dinos defence completely befuddled the Vikes. “We actually match up pretty well as teams, so we knew it would be an interesting competition,” said Dino guard Erin McIntosh. “The Vikes are obviously very talented offensively, and our defensive record is pretty solid, so we knew we had to stick to our guns and get it done on defense first. Our defense feeds our offense, so it was a good play to start with. We messed up on the scout a couple of times, and there are definitely areas we can clean up, but overall, we did what we wanted to do. … It was different playing with such a huge advantage. You don’t want to step off the gas at any point; both teams sometimes slow it down. I feel tonight both teams pushed hard to the end, and it was a case of doing what you have to.” Vikes coach Dani Sinclair said her troops 13-game winning streak ended because of self-inflicted wounds. “They have put up scores like that this year and we knew they were capable of that if you let them score in transition and grab offensive rebounds. We kind of played into their strengths and it definitely wasn’t the night we were looking for. … We have to defend better, take care of the ball and rebound. It’s pretty basic stuff but they make it hard to do those things.” Brianna Ghali paced the Dinos with 24 on 10-15 from the floor, 1-6 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 8 boards, 2 assists and 4 steals. Erin McIntosh added 24 on 8-8 from the floor, 4-4 from the arc, 4-4 from the line, 7 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals. Shannon Hatch added 14 on 5-10 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 2-2 from the line, 8 boards, 3 assists and 3 blocks. Bobbi-Jo Colburn notched 12 on 4-10 from the floor, 1-4 from the arc, 3-5 from the line, 5 boards and 3 steals. Liene Stalidzane added 10 on 5-10 from the floor, 0-2 from the arc, 4 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals. Michaela Nieuwenhuiz added 6 on 1-2 from the floor, 4-4 from the line and 5 boards. Katie Upham scored 6 on 2-3 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc and 2-2 from the line. Laura Grabe added 5 on 2-3 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 5 assists and 2 steals. Reyna Crawford scored 4 on 2-4 from the floor, 0-2 from the arc, 3 boards and 2 assists, while Hilary Annich was scoreless and nabbed 4 boards and dished 2 assists. The Dinos hit 39-67 (.582) from the floor, 9-26 (.346) from the arc and 18-21 (.857) from the line, while garnering 49 boards, including 11 on the offensive glass, 21 assists, 16 steals, 5 blocks, 18 turnovers and 16 fouls. Ashlyn Day paced the Vikes with 16 on 5-13 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 4-6 from the line, 4 boards, 2 assists and 3 steals. Haily Weaver added 6 on 2-8 from the floor, 2-4 from the line and 6 boards. Katie Langdon scored 6 on 3-7 from the floor and 2 boards. Amira Giannattasio notched 6 on 3-8 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 3 boards and 2 steals. Morgan Roskelley scored 5 on 2-2 from the floor and 1-1 from the arc. Kristy Gallagher added 2 on 0-10 from the floor, 0-2 from the arc, 2-2 from the line, 3 boards and 2 assists. Calli McMillan scored 2 on 0-5 from the floor, 0-1 from the arc, 2-2 from the line and 3 assists. Ellen Ougrinov added 2 on 0-4 from the floor, 0-4 from the arc, 2-2 from the line and 4 boards. Lyndzie Caron scored 2 on 1-5 from the floor. Amy Sprangers added 2 on 1-1 from the floor, while Aleah Ashlee and Kennedy Cuspard were scoreless. The Vikes hit 17-66 (.258) from the floor, 3-13 (.231) from the arc and 12-16 (.750) from the line, while garnering 29 boards, including 12 on the offensive glass, 9 assists, 8 steals, 22 turnovers and 15 fouls. …………………………………………………… Calgary completed the series sweep by smacking Victoria 80-61 after leading 21-12, 49-34 and 67-50 at the quarters. Calgary’s lockdown defence again completely befuddled the Vikes. “Last night was a completely different story: we had five people in double figures, and then tonight you’re getting it from the bench instead,” said Dinos coach Damian Jennings. “That’s who we are – each game presents a different scenario, no game is ever the same, so for us to be able to know that if we have a night where it’s not coming from the starting group, the rotations are wonderful options. … (As for the defence), I think we did win that battle, yeah. Not to take away from the efforts of Victoria tonight, they certainly came at us more aggressively, and their defence stifled us a little bit today. But I think our defence won the double battle this weekend.” Vikes coach Dani Sinclair said “I’m really proud of our girls. … At the end of the day that was a pretty devastating punch in the face for us last night and I thought our girls responded well, they came out playing gritty and tough, they did everything they could. In the first half we had total control in almost every category but we turned the ball over 20 times. Just when we would start to cut into the lead we would give up another turnover and that hurt us a lot. Tons of credit to Calgary, they were the better team. They executed better than we did, they made layups, got the loose balls and forced turnovers from us. … You don’t want the disappointment, losing sucks, but unless you win the national championship there is going to be heartbreak along the way for every team. We are in a unique situation where we have the chance to bring everybody back, but the key for us is to not be stagnant and stay in the same place, if we do that then we are falling behind. We need to take this and use it as motivation to be better.” Bobbi-Jo Colburn paced the Dinos with 22 on 8-12 from the floor and 6-7 from the arc. Shannon Hatch added 12 on 4-14 from the floor, 1-3 from the arc, 3-4 from the line, 7 boards, 3 assists and 3 steals. The Cougars led by 11 on a Kyia Giles layup midway through the final quarter. But Calgary chipped away and a Liene Stalidzane trey made it a one-possession game with two minutes to play. Neither team was subsequently to score, though Dinos Brianna Ghali and Shannon Hatch bounced bombs off the rim. “That was a playoff basketball game out there and I’m obviously happy we were able to grind out a win,” said Cougars coach Dave Taylor. “We haven’t had a lot of those type of games and at times we didn’t handle it very well, and we’ll need to focus on doing a better job of closing out wins moving forward.” Charlotte Kot paced the Cougars with 12 on 6-14 from the floor, 7 boards and 2 assists. Kyia Giles added 11 on 3-6 from the floor, 1-2 from the arc, 4-4 from the line, 5 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals. The Dinos led 13-10 after one quarter and 34-28 at the half. The Cougars led 50-42 after three quarters. “It wasn’t the usual recipe for a win being outscored in three quarters, giving up more shot attempts, and turning the ball over more times than they did,” said Cougars coach Dave Taylor. “But it was a great team win as we got great bench production, especially from Avery Pearce who was critical for us in the second half. Kyanna (Giles) played well coming off an extended rest due to foul trouble and gave us a spark, and we got great fifth-year leadership from Charlotte (Kot) who logged big minutes for us.” The Cougars went scoreless for 7 minutes and Calgary led by as many as 11 but Regina ripped off a 15-3 run in the third quarter to take the lead. The only thing that will hurt us is if we don’t learn from the experience. We need to come back better and tougher tomorrow. Kayla Gordon and Summer Masikewich traded buckets and then Sarah Buckingham buried a trey with 14 seconds to play to give Trinity Western the lead for good. Spartans coach Cheryl Jean-Paul said “tonight’s theme was to push back and I thought we did a great job of that when it counted. We knew we had to be better on the offensive glass, we had to maintain our tempo and create for each other. When we stuck to that game plan we had success. The third quarter was a great response to yesterday’s loss and we are looking forward to the battle tomorrow.
