In the semis, held in Calgary, the host Dinosaurs defeated U.B.C. 71-54 as Jodi Evans and Audra Duregon each scored 14. Linda Orr added 12. U.B.C. was led by Jana Jordan’s 12 points. Devanee Peterson added 11. “We were kind of expecting more of them,” said Orr. “We found it easy to break the press and our offence was in high gear most of the game.” Duregon noted that “UBC played us tough for the first few minutes but then they missed some of their shots and they got down on themselves.” Victoria coach Kathy Shields said “somewhere along the way we lost our confidence. We had a really solid week of practice but maybe that just a disguise for our lack of confidence.”

In the other semi, Lethbridge defeated Victoria 82-66 as Shawna Molcak scored 23. Sandi Begg led the Vikettes with 18. Kelly Boucher added 13 and Heather Bohez 10.

In the bronze medal match, Victoria defeated U.B.C. 70-64 as Shannon Conway scored 22. Lisa Nickle led the Thunderbirds with 13. Elissa Beckett added 12. The Thunderbirds (coached by Misty Thomas) also included Jana Jordan, Devanee Peterson, Val Philpott, Lorraine Marken, Tania Gladiuk, Karen Borsutzky, Andrea Tomczyk, Tiffany Chester, Jenny Mann, Wendi Palmer and Leslie Fedorak.

In the final, Calgary thumped Lethbridge 83-63 as Jodi Evans scored 34. “She was a one woman wrecking crew,” said Lethbridge coach Trix Baker. “She is incredible.” Evans wanted to end her career on a high note. “We knew that, in order to get to the nationals, we had to win. I think if someone would have told we’d be going to Quebec (at the start of the season, with eight rookies in the lineup), I would have thought they were wrong.” Sue Jickling, who added 17, said “our shots kept falling for us and they got rattled. Our rookies were just outstanding the whole year.” Those included Lisa Bacigalupi and Mieke VanderValk, both of whom only scored two but played solid interior defence and rebounded the ball well. Linda Orr notched 8 and Patti Cumming 11. Shawna Molcak led the Horns with 23. “Shawna was outstanding,” said Calgary coach Jane Anne Smith. “She just played a fabulous game. … Lethbridge played us the way I expected them to. Because we ran more, it made a difference.” Calgary led 40-39 early in the second half but Calgary broke it open with a 12-2 run. The Dinosaurs had led 38-33 at the half. “The whole thing is like a dream to me,” Smith added. “Before the game, I said to the girls that we’re one game away from a berth in nationals. And they all sort of had this smirk. I never would have though this thing could have happened.”
