In the other semi, Lethbridge thrashed Alberta 68-53. The Pronghornettes zone defence befuddled Alberta. The score was knotted at 27 at the half. “It was really a second half game,” said Alberta’s Annette Sanregret. “And they had all the momentum.” Alberta coach Sherry Melney said “we really had a tough time with their zone defence. We had worked on it all week in practice but we couldn’t handle it during the game.” Trish Campbell said “even if you did get a pass inside, they would clamp on you so fast and so tightly that it was almost impossible to get a shot away or pass it out.” Lethbridge broke to a 15-9 lead but Alberta scored 12 unanswered before going into a shooting slump. Inge Pot kept driving the ball at the Pandas in the second half and drawing fouls. Sanregret, Lisa Janz and Debbie O’Byrne all fouled out for Alberta. Pot led the Pronghornettes with 17. Jodi Savage added 14 and Dori Rodzinyak 13. Sanregret led Alberta with 17. Lisa Janz added 14 and Debbie O’Byrne 7.
In the bronze medal match, Calgary edged Alberta 66-61. “Last game, last game,” hollered Calgary coach Donna Rudakas at the start and that seemed to motivate the Dinnies. Alberta led 33-30 at the half but the Dinnies came to life in the second half. Alberta rookie Sofie Jarosinski said “we simply didn’t play up to our potential and it’s tough to end the season like that.” Shelaine Kozakavich paced Alberta with 17. Annette Sanregret added 5 steals. The Pandas also included Lisa Janz, Debbie O’Byrne, Trish Campbell, Zofia Jarosinski, Kathy Keats, Dawn Schooler, Michelle Durand, Nancy Matheson, Lisa Kalynchuk and Margaret Uytdewilligen. Panda coach Sherry Melney earns Canada West and CIAU coach of the year awards for the remarkable job she did in rebuilding the Pandas, who graduated three starters.
