In the semis, Victoria defeated Calgary 56-48 as Sandy Chambers scored 14, Janet Fowler 12, Susie Neil 11, Sandy Espeseth 10, Liz Sara 4, Tessa Valg 2, Kim Poland 2 and Sandy Pothier 1, while Irena Sledecek, Karen McConnell and Lori Clarke were scoreless. Debbie Patterson paced the Dinnies with 19. Brenda Abbott added 8, Jane Adolphe 7, JoLayne Anderson 4, Karen Degner 4, Lisa Adolphe 2, Diane Bailey 2 and Laura Ryckman 2, while Jackie Dais, Pam Shimik and Pat Johnson were scoreless.
In the other semi, host Alberta nipped Lethbridge 46-45. Pronghornette Angela Hlavka missed a free throw with a minute to play that would have forced overtime. Sue Tokariuk led Alberta with 16.
In the bronze medal match, Lethbridge dumped Calgary 84-65. The Dinosaurs (coached by Donna Roman-Rudakas) included Jane Adolphe, Brenda Abbott, Karen Degner, Debbie Patterson, Diane Bailey, Laura Ryckman, Elise Adolphe, Jolayne Anderson, Bonnie Johnson, Claire Mitenko, Jackie Dais and Pam Shimek.
In the final, Victoria thrashed Alberta 68-45 as Sandy Chambers scored 19, Sandy Espeseth 15, Lori Clarke 12, Susie Neil 8, Janet Fowler 8, Sandy Pothier 2, Kim Poland 2 and Liz Sara 2, while Tessa Valg and Karen McConnell were scoreless. Victoria led 42-29 at the half. “Victoria did the one thing that we didn’t expect,” said Alberta’s Sue Tokariuk. “That is that they ran their fastbreak through the game. We were prepared for their (ball control) offence. We just weren’t prepared for the running game.” Tokariuk paced the Pandas with 17. Toni Kordic added 10, Laura Cabott 6, Trish Campbell 6, Jenny Webking 4 and Lisa Janz 2, while Shelaine Kozzakavich was scoreless.
After the season, Debbie Shogan takes a leave of absence at Alberta and is replaced by Sherry Melney, coach at McNally High in Edmonton. Shogan subsequently resigns a year later to assume a position in the athletic department.
Saskatchewan’s Pat Jackson resigns after 20 years at the helm, in which she amaxxed a 378-234 record, including 166-130 in conference play.
