Victoria captured its third consecutive crown by defeating Calgary in the finals 74-48; 67-46 (2g-0).
In game one, the Vikings prevailed 74-48 after exploding for a 17-2 run over six minutes midway through the first half. The Vikings full-court press forced turnovers by the bucket. Victoria led 36-25 at the half. National team member Carol Turney led Victoria with 31 points while Leslie and Shelley Godfrey each scored 13, Luanne Hebb 5, Mairi-Anne Longmore 4, Cindy Smith 4, Brenda Smith 2 and Jan Turner 2. The Vikettes hot .440 from the floor and committed 14 turnovers to Calgary’s 31. Calgary coach Marilyn McNeil told the Gauntlet that the Dinnies failure to break the press fueled the Vikings transition game. Vikes coach Mike Gallo noted that “I didn’t think that we made the most of the opportunities that the press gave us. But I was pleased that it worked as well as it did.” Calgary shot .250 from the floor, with Jacky Shaw scoring 24 points and collecting 11 rebounds. Holly Jackson added 10, Lori Nelson 4, Darla Wilson 4, Linda Hirsch 2, Colleen Finney 2 and Janis Paskevich 2.
In game two, Victoria breezed 67-46. The Vikings opened with a 15-2 run and moved ahead 35-22 at the half. Their 2-1-2 zone befuddled Calgary, forcing 17 turnovers in the first half. They switched to man-to-man in the second half and created equal havoc. The Vikings outscored Calgary 14-8 to open the second half and then Calgary all-star Holly Jackson fouled out. Vic responded by ripping off 11 unanswered points. Carol Turney led Victoria with 16. Marg Mainwaring added 14, Leslie Godfrey 13, Luanne Hebb 8, Shelley Godfrey 6, Mairi-Anne Longmore 5, Roni Hind 2, Jan Turner 2 and Brenda Smith 1. Holly Jackson paced Calgary with 12.
