The Bisons dominated the boards, particularly in the fourth quarter when they rallied from a two-point deficit, while Bison Mason Kraus contained Bobcat star Sultan Haider-Bhatti. “Being a little shorter than [Haider Bhatti] but more athletic, I was able to pressure him in the full court and make his life difficult dribbling it up, so that when he finally got me in the post, he’d be tired,” said Kraus. “He started settling, so that gave us easier opportunities in transition. … We struggled in the game from three. Just happy to get this one and focus on tomorrow,” said O’Connor. “We have a very experienced team, and we play composed. Every day in practice we go as hard at each other as we can.        In the quarterfinals, the top-seeded host Winnipeg Wesmen (1st, Prairie) clipped the 9th-seeded Calgary Dinos 82-69 after leading 25-14, 42-30 and 65-54 at the quarters. Calgary rallied to within nine in the third quarter after notching a 13-0 run but the Wesmen regained control quickly in the final frame. They held Calgary scoreless over the final three minutes. “I thought at times we sort of played into what they wanted us to do,” said Wesmen coach Mike Raimbault. “There were stretches where we stopped playing with the pace that we needed to play with and they turned us over and got some easy ones. But, at the end of the day, I thought our desire to be successful was high enough for us to get a win.” Calgary coach Dan Vanhooren lamented lax defensive transitions. “We had a little bit more ball pressure (in the second half). The truth is, in the quarter court, we weren’t bad even in the first half. In the first half what we gave up was just transition run-outs. We could have been a little bit nervous going into the second quarter, but I think we stayed cool and we made the right plays, and it turned out to work for us,” said Vikes coach Murphy Burnatowski. I thought that we were we ran out of gas a little bit early, and I mean, in those games, the more energetic team is probably going to win. … In playoffs, you have to play your best basketball when it matters, and they took us out of stuff that we wanted to do.
