And defensively, we stayed disciplined and executed our game plan. We were able to get some stops early and that gave us a few run-outs.” Wolfpack coach Scott Clark said “we really struggled defensively. We had some injuries which slowed us down. They were good. It is what it is. We were exposed a little bit to the playoffs. The Vikes again took the lead, on a pull-up by Hayden Lejeune, but Unruh drove the paint for an ‘and-one’ with 11 seconds to play. An open look at a trey by Vike Jason Scully missed the mark as the clock expired. “Overall this game represented our season,” said Vikes coach Craig Beaucamp. “There were a lot of ups and downs and it ended in a very tough loss. At this point we have no choice but to be positive about what we learned, the experience we gained and we know what we can do better for next year. … We got off to a really slow start and the room for error is slim when you do that. The game was won and lost more in the first 20 minutes of play than the final minute. … Both teams missed shots in the first quarter and in the second we continued the same way while theirs started to fall. We had a tough time getting our legs going, got a little frustrated and they put us in a big hole.” Alex Unruh paced the Huskies with 24 on 9-14 from the floor, 2-4 from the arc, 4-4 from the line, 3 boards, 5 assists and 4 steals. In the quarterfinals, the 4th-seeded Lethbridge Pronghorns defeated the 5th-seeded Regina Cougars 115-68; 105-98 (2g-0). …………………………………………………… In game one, the Pronghorns clocked the Cougars 115-68 after leading 33-13, 55-27 and 89-48 at the quarters. The Pronghorns opened with a 7-0 run, hit 7 treys in the opening quarter, and coasted, scoring a season-high 115. Pronghorns coach Mike Hansen told the Lethbridge Herald that horrific road conditions aided his troops. “We’ve had slow starts all semester and we really talked about jumping out early. “I feel horrible for coach (Steve Burrows). They got trapped on the highway yesterday outside of Medicine Hat. It took them nine or 10 hours to get here. They got in late last night and they were trying to get set to go. So I told the guys it’s playoff time and I feel bad for them, but we had to jump on them early. We were able to get an early lead and then from there you could just tell they didn’t have any legs. We’re going to have to be a lot better tomorrow defensively and close up some of those gaps. … I thought Dejon [Burdeaux] really stepped up tonight and it’s hard with him out of the lineup for so long (that) I think it was tough for them to game plan it and they’re going to focus in on him a little more tomorrow. Overwater really stepped up, guys made shots. I think the key for us is we just have to continue keeping them from getting downhill on us and get to the rim.” Zac Overwater said “that was a great start. We came out hot and had the home court, so the energy was up. It’s always nice playing at home. We came out and jumped on them early and caused some turnovers. We played great defence, hit the glass, and we shot the ball really well, too. They didn’t shoot the ball as well, (but) we can’t count on that tomorrow night.” Zac Overwater paced the Pronghorns with 24 on 10-15 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc, 2-4 from the line, 11 boards, 3 steals and 2 blocks. DeJon Burdeaux added 22 on 5-12 from the floor, 1-1 from the arc, 11-12 from the line, 6 boards, 2 assists and 2 steals. But the Pronghorns stiffened their defence, held Regina scoreless for 5.5 minutes, while ripping off an 8-0 run and rallying to knot the score at 89 after regulation. An attempted Igual trey at the buzzer rimmed out. The Pronghorns scored the first 6 points in the extra session as the Cougar were in major foul trouble (four had fouled out) and starter Brian Ofori was ineligible after being suspended for the game due to accumulation of technical fouls. Regina was down to their final 5 plays for the last 2 minutes of play. “Regina played great tonight and their veterans really battled to the end,” said Pronghorns coach Mike Hansen. “We had too many breakdowns but made played when we really needed to. “[Zac] Overwater and [Kyle] Peterson were brilliant tonight and Burdeaux gutted out an unbelievable defensive effort in his last home game. This is a special group, it’s been 18 years since we last reached the Canada West Semi-finals. Conor Morgan dominated the first quarter as the Thunderbirds said they were determined to avenge a quarterfinal series loss to the Bisons a year earlier. The Bisons never seriously threatened. U.B.C. coach Kevin Hanson said ““I thought there was a little bit of playoff jitters early obviously for the veteran guys coming back there was a little bit of a memory from last year. We didn’t really talk too much about it but I think it was there and just the early start putting us off our routine a little. We eventually found our legs, and once we made some things happen they played loose and once we played loose we were fine. What I really liked was our guys stuck to the game plan that we came up with through the week and I said to them to them post game that there was a lot of positives on the defensive and offensive end. There was a lot of individual performances that were really good but overall there was a lot of guys that did some really good things and I think our depth really showed in the end of this game.” Conor Morgan paced the Thunderbirds with 21 on 6-14 from the floor, 2-3 from the arc, 7-8 from the line, 11 boards and 5 assists. I’ve had the chance to coach him and he’s a great person and a great basketball player so he should be holding his head high leaving this gym after his last USports game. … You know we’re a funny team that if we get hot and on a roll, we get in a positive mindset and can score in a multitude of ways. They did a good job on us as we went through a little dry spell in the second-quarter but our I felt our defence held us in for the most part when we weren’t getting those opportunities. The Dinos led 63-61 after three quarters. “Coming back after getting swept for the first time in three years during the season (against Alberta). To come back and win on their gym. It’s incredible,” said Connor Foreman. “It’s another step. We have three more games next week [at nationals], and we have to be ready for those. We are gonna come out, and give it our all.” Dinos coach Dan Vanhooren told Canada West TV that “I’m so proud of our guys. They worked really hard at our game plan, they battled for every rebound. We just beat a really good basketball team, by doing what we were supposed to do. David [Kapinga] had a tremendous basketball game tonight, and it showed why he was on the FISU national team with us and such a leader for us.
