In the playoffs (a best-of-three final, no semis), Calgary swept U.B.C. 77-59; 89-72 (2g-0).

In game one, Calgary prevailed 77-59 after taking a 30-29 lead at the half. The Dinosaurs had led by nine early but U.B.C ripped off a 9-0 run to draw to take a 29-28 lead before Calgary hit two free throws in the final seconds of the first half. The Dinosaurs exploded with a 13-0 over three minutes late in the second half and then coasted to the victory, capping it with a fast-break slam from Tom Bishop on a beautiful feed from Greg Hess. Tom Bishop paced the Dinosaurs with 25, along with 10 boards. Pat Lee added 19. Dinosaur forward Mike Santiago dislocated his kneecap in the second half and was lost to Calgary for the remainder of the season. Calgary outrebounded U.B.C. 44-34 and committed 17 turnovers, as compared with 30 for U.B.C. Chris Trumpy replied with 12 for U.B.C. and Mike McKay 11. U.B.C. made the finals despite having lost returning scoring leader Steve Pettifer early in the season. Pettifer was kicked off the team for disciplinary reasons.

In the second game, Calgary thrashed U.B.C. 89-72 as Ken Rucker scored 19, Pat Lee 17, Tom Bishop 12, Greg Hess 12, Hellard 10 and Ian Mackay 7. Mike McKay led U.B.C. with 14. Jan Bohn added 12 on 10-10 from the line. Calgary took a double-digit lead in the first quarter, led 41-29 at the half, and were never seriously threatened. Ken Rucker told the Calgary Herald “that’s what this team is all about. We play together, not as individuals. … (coach) put us together and kept us close. I think the guys would do anything for him.” Dinosaurs coach Gary Howard told the Gauntlet that “I think the bench has been the key to our success all year long. Any time you can go through a season and win 32 games and lose only three, you’ve got to have more than five players. That’s the reason we’ve come through in the close ball games. If you go back over the record books, you’ll find we haven’t lost any close ones. These kids have come through and its been the bench that’s done it. We just have the team, eleven players, and that’s what it takes.” Calgary ripped down 27 offensive boards and outrebounded UBC 51-37. “The only thing it takes to get an offensive rebound is a thing called ambition, and our kids have ambition,” said Howard. Captain Ian Mackay said “we just wanted to go out there and play D (defence). We wanted to deny the ball, make sure they made the turnovers, and force the play. We let them come to us.” UBC committed 22 turnovers and Calgary 17.

At the conclusion of the season, Alberta coach Barry Mitchelson announces his resignation “to spend more time with my family.” The Bears had finished 9-11, the worst record in Mitchelson’s tenure. He is replaced by Garry Smith, who was coaching for the football team.
